I'm proud to say I've been a supporter of APOPO for years with their mine-clearing program where the rats sniff out landmines. The rats' sense of smell is in the range of dogs - or better - and they're too light to set off the mines. They've done a lot of good in southeast Asia and other places.

I knew they were training the same rats (Ghanaian Giant Pouch Rats if I remember right) to sniff out TB and stuff. I didn't know about this collapsed building thing, but good on them. Makes perfect sense.

I thought this was going to be about eating rats to survive while trapped under rubble.

Been a big supporter of APOPO for years now.  Donations to them are on my Xmas list every year.

Now, for a bit of a personal plug, my short story, "Some Kind of Hero" is about a wizard, Simon Lazarus, who does exactly this sort of thing with his 4 rat familiars.  It's in an anthology called Live Free or Dragons, the 6th volume in the New Hampshire Pulp Fiction series.  available directly from Plaidswede Press, or you can find it on Amazon.  My first published story, "Love in the Time of Zombies" was in the first NH Pulp Fiction book, Live Free or Undead.

Simon Lazarus and his rats also appeared in "Dormouse" in last year's Fark anthology, and will be returning in the next one, in "Snakes on the Plains".

Well, I've had 27 of them over the years...
