NuclearPenguins: And nothing of value was lost.

What do you have against capitalism? Capitalism that artificially inflates the price of real estate and turns peasants into nouvelle noblesse? But capitalism nonetheless.

That's going to impact a lot of small investors who bought a lot of houses to rent out at insane mark ups.

I believe it. Buddy and I went to Red Rocks for the South Park concert. We were checking out Airbnbs and some were like $180/night (not too bad), but cleaning fees of $300 + other fees + all the rules made it completely not worth it. We stayed at a Holiday Inn about 5 miles away for about $300 total between the two of us.

Hotels are inspected, licensed, adhere to safety standards, have sprinklers, and at Best Western they have breakfast buffets. They don't have imperious, inexperienced managers treating you like a temporary maid service. Instead of a cleaning list and cleaning fee, you just leave $10 or $20 under the remote control when you leave.

We rented a pit in Chicago.  Cheap, yes. But there was a gas leak that made the place dangerous.  Did Airbnb care?  No: they protect the providers of their services.

Problem? Meh. Don't click "Add". Look for a better deal elsewhere.

I've worked with Air BnB lessors and I'm a user. You get what you pay for. It is not complicated.

Does that mean there will soon be a glut of houses on the market that were bought by companies to get around hotel regulations?

The only good use for AirBnB is when you are traveling to a destination as a whole family and have offspring that are past the 'sharing a room with their sibling/mom and dad' phase, or even a large group of friends. It's hard to find hotels with extra large divided rooms, and if so, they usually end up being more than an AirBnb. Otherwise, yeah why not just stay in a hotel?

This. I don't doubt for a second there's some awful Airbnb "hosts" but I've been impressed every time I've used the service. I'm also a stingy weirdo who doesn't mind spending hours finding what looks to be the best place w/in my budget.

FWIW, I've only used it when traveling and staying abroad (especially in Asia where I've traveled the most right before and after the pandemic). It wouldn't surprise if it's way more hit and miss for listings in North America.

We will be staying in a Hilton in San Jose the week before Thanksgiving. Three nights - $396. Two queen beds, coffee service, maid service, pool, spa, gym, restaurant.  Meals are extra.

Pretty much. We traveled to England and France over the summer as a group of 8 (4 adults, 4 kids).  A hotel with shared rooms would have been astronomical.

Otherwise hotels are fine. But i don't really need any of the amenities.

Vacation rentals/Airbnbs usually have kitchens, usually have price breaks for longer stays, often have more room/working space/outdoor space.  For a couple nights in a city, yeah, hotel is way more convenient.  Depends on how you're traveling.

I inherited my mom's two small dogs, so when I travel, they come along, and I have to stay at a place that takes dogs. While there aren't that many hotels that do - thank you, La Quinta - I have yet to spot a single AirBnB that does.

AirBnB farked us over during covid. We were stupidly too pro-active about our plans and cancelled and rebooked when our plans were switched from a full week in that city to just a long weekend because of covid. Then the event was postponed altogether and we had to cancel, but because we had rebooked only a few weeks before, we were no longer eligible for a covid-related refund.

Venue owner was as stubborn and unhelpful as humanly possible, so AirBnB was contacted. They were maybe 10% more helpful. After days of irritating back-and-forth with them, we finally got half of our money back.

The hotel I booked for a different event a few weeks later, meanwhile, had a clear cancellation policy of "100% of your money back if you cancel 5 or more days in advance."

We haven't stayed in an AirBnB since. Fark them.

So, in addition to everything else that has been said, AirBnB's cancellation policies can be a farking joke.

I've booked 2 airbnbs and cancelled both. They wouldn't let me drop off luggage early (before check-in) or the host didn't pass the vibe check.

Now, I've booked experiences through airbnb and they were both really good. (One was a sunset sailboat cruise in Barcelona and the other was a walking drink/food tour in Lisbon. Would highly recommend both of the hosts for those.

/your mileage may vary

Most people don't expect you to go all Molly Maid - just that you leave it basically not a farking mess.  About how you'd act as a guest at random friend's home if you were staying there watching the place or something.  That's not unreasonable.  Then there are the majority of assholes that have figured out they can charge astronomical fees no matter what you do, because fark you that's why.  It has nothing to do with expecting you to clean, and everything to do with tacking on more enormous charges

It would open up a good number of apartments that are currently only being rented by the week, or even just a weekend. That is what bakes my noodle. Folks who HAVE apartments buildings, and AirBnB a chunk of them exclusively. Found a bunch when I went back to Boston for a weekend, and it was a nice place. Not remotely livable for real people, but it was nicer than a hotel room, and right smack dab in the middle of the North End, and in the middle of some of the best food the city could offer. But it wasn't a place that people actually lived in, just rented out, a lot. Easily made more, I'm sure, than if they'd rented it as an actual domicile. But this is kind of where this sort of thing leads folks.

If you ever use AirBNB, add a ".au" to the end of the url: airbnb.com.au

Australian law requires disclosure of all fees.  Just change your currency to whatever you use and you can see all the charges.  And there's a lot of them.

Some hotels, especially in Vegas, have been experimenting with this business model with their non-compable resort fees.

2022-10-22 11:43:32 PM
My neighbor occasionally lists their house on AirB&B, but for her it's just a way to make a little bit of extra cash when they go away for a weekend. To me, that's the right way to do it. People who buy up multiple properties and turn them into full-time micro-rentals are the ones who farked it up for everyone else.

I spent the month of September in an AirBnB in Cartagena, CO. Fantastic place and the host was amazing. It was a condo on the 24th floor of a new building on the water. First floor was a supermarket and next 4 floors was a shopping mall with a floor of just restaurants.

A lot of the condos in that building are on AirBnB but the one I got had the lowest cleaning fees. Around $200 for the month which was a steal because it was cleaned every other day.

Internet was 500Mbps. Definitely will be my new home base when I'm diving the Caribbean. Not bad for about $95 a night all in.

Balcony had a nice view of the naval yard. I never knew how many subs the Colombian navy had.

I'll dance on the grave of every farker who wants to rape tourists rather than just make good money renting long term.

And even in that situation, booking.com will be cheaper, at least in Europe. You'll find the property on both platforms. The base room price might be the same but Airbnb has higher fees and still doesn't have a loyalty program like booking.com does.

VRBO and booking.com are my go too. I also only rent places in vacation areas and look for ones that are run by management companies locally.  That way there's actual customer service if something goes wrong.

Both my experiences with AirBnB were disasters and a lot of that was due to renting from random strangers.

Also they should die just for false advertising. I know of no AirBnB that offers breakfast. They're a far cry from an actual B&B which are awesome.

Proud to say I have never used them. I stay in hotels like a normal person.
