The article is kind of disingenuous because it ties the phenomenon to the current City Council brouhaha. But it is true, a lot of people with clear aspirations to federal government have come out of the L.A. mayor's job never to be heard from again.

The city of Los Angeles has 4 million people, and 15 city council members.

That's one city council member for 267,000 people.  Each mook gets emails from a quarter of a million people about potholes, ugly city parks, and homeless encampments....that's essentially ungovernable.

It's just the job of president writ small.

"Why can't you personally fix all these problems instantly and forever that have been developing for 90 years and that also involve the 30 cities in and around LA plus three other counties and Mexico? You're just useless!"

Just as a for-instance, some of Garcetti's biggest detractors are in Orange County and don't even live or work in his bailiwick. But they just KNOW he should be doing better.

It wasn't their fault. There is nothing they could do.

It's a political busybody against a developer, since we didn't have a clear winner in the primary. They're both out of Central Casting.

I think we would be better off randomly selecting a homeless person and making them mayor. If nothing else, we helped a homeless person move into a house for a few years.

Orange County seems like it is crawling with knob-spittles.

What do political aspirations have to do with public service?

Usually to get to the LA mayor's office you have to put enough political bodies in the ground that you have a lot of liabilities when being considered for national office. Also, nobody likes Californians.

If there was 60 seats, does that mean the job is more important, or less?

Yes, and also no.

The City of Los Angeles is probably one of the strangest cities in the country. There is the actual City of L.A.; but enclosed within that space is the City of West Hollywood (a separate city with its own mayor and council) the City of Beverly Hills (ditto) and Santa Monica (also ditto). Along the borders of L.A. are Inglewood, Compton, Burbank, and Glendale (see above). Just to make it more complicated ALL those cities are part of the COUNTY of Los Angeles.

Decisions made by the Mayor and Council of Los Angeles are only made "for" the City of Los Angeles--but they're going to impact  West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and most of the rest of the county by virtue of the strange size and shape of the city. (see below)

Realistically, the "city" should either be the whole area or it should be trimmed into a better shape so the council could govern a bit better; but this is what they have to work with.

The map is a bit misleading, because Santa Monica and Beverly Hills are separate cities, and the map doesn't show West Hollywood, but you can see what's going on.

garcetti is an ineffectual wanker that has no interest in the job beyond it being a springboard to something bigger.

should also probably stop beating up his boyfriend.

I thought Garcetti did just fine for the most part.  I'm concerned about the new batch.  Caruso is a former Republican and Bass is as meek as they come.

That said the biggest election in LA this fall is for the sheriff.  Mayors are basically cheerleaders for the city, but the sheriff has real power, and Villanueva abuses all the power he can get his hands on to the detriment of many in the county

"Whoever the next mayor is, it's basically like leading England after World War II."

Like Clement Attlee, the father of the welfare state and widely regarded as one of the best Prime Ministers of all time?

I guess what you're saying is that they need to be good. Okay. If political careers are dying at at the mayor's office, maybe the problem is that rising politicians should stop looking at that office as a stepping stone to something bigger. Try to be good at being the mayor, and if you manage it, maybe people will want you to do something else.

villanueva wants to be an eviler version of joe arpaio. he is a dangerous asshole that needs to be run out of town.

the second the chief of police blamed george floyd's death on blm protesters the mayor should've taken him by the farking ear and marched him out of the building.  fark that asshole.
