There was a similar case near Newark, where a trucker didn't like that his boss could track him via GPS. He installed a cheap GPS jammer (which isn't legal, but easily available) to jam the device in his truck, but ended up disrupting Newark air traffic over a number of days because he tended to drive the same route every day. The FCC fined him $31,875.

The difficulty with GPS is that it's a really low power signal, and so easy to jam.

That might be more apparent if the jamming location moved during the day, but TFA doesn't seem to mention that.

To continue this thought I think we can expect a few more things like power stations going down. NG pipeline valves getting stuck open/closed.

That might be more apparent if the jamming location moved during the day, but TFA doesn't seem to mention that.


But it did move. Look at the animated tweet in TFA. It started to the northwest, and then ended up centered on Dallas. That's consistent with a truck or car driving to Dallas and then parking.

The main point is that very little power is required to jam GPS, especially in an airport terminal area as aircraft get closer to the ground.

Don't have, never used GPS..  moved here in '65, know the area well.  Do hvac, locate new addresses on Mapquest, relate them to known areas and drive straight to them.. they are then memorized.. meh...

If you get within 10 meters of your destination and still can't find it, I don't think a better satellite is going to help you

GPS only functions because no one has really tried to hijack it yet. It's unprotected. Unauthenticated. And your receiver will just believe whatever the strongest transmitter is telling it. We are due for a mass GPS hijacking incident. But of course it will happen in Texas first because they probably have their own GPS signal so they aren't relying on the federal government, or something.

Last time this happened to DC airport it was because someone was running a GPS hammer on the work van so the bus wouldn't see him picking up his dry cleaning.

Long ago aircraft used ADF but it costs too much to maintain the ADF transmitters according to the FAA.  An ADF transmitter is  a AM radio transmitter.  The logical way of dealing with the issue would have been to just use high power commercial AM transmitters as the ADF waypoints but the FAA wouldn't do that for some reason. It is trivial to jam a 25 watt transmitter that is sending out a morse code ID but it is far harder to jam WGN in Chicago with their 50,000 watts.  In a plane the ADF dial points to the radio station or lighting in thunderstorms. One of my pilot instructors would tune the ADF and listen to Rush Limbaugh on long flights. I quickly learned to pick training courses that required the ADF tuned to airports.

The system used before GPS was VOR and the oldest of those use a rotating antenna. VORs are calibrated to magnetic north so they have to screw with them every few years in addition to other normal maintenance.  Long ago there would often be 4 VOR transmitters around a major city with one at the airport. The one at DFW is the newest type and it is built on a platform on the south side between the roads but I would expect it to be one the last ones to be decommissioned.
