See, this is why they had to Brexit. All this metric shiat is totally wack.

If they'd just measured everything in good olde English rods and furlongs, this would never have happened.

There was a late 90s tv show called The Games sort of like Yes Minister but about preparing for the Sydney olympics. They had a few issues where the best option was to shorten the course.  One of its writer's was The Front Fell Off guy.

Rod Furlong would be a good name for a newscaster.

she has a great attitude about it, AND she knew it was short immediately.

How hard can it be to walk the course with a distance measuring wheel (or more advanced distance-measuring-thingy) BEFORE the race? You'd think being a football field and a half off would be fairly easy to figure out.

The brits had an exception to use pints and miles.  One of the many things that make rejoining the EU politically impossible now and remain difficult as things get worse.

Would also be good for a cable installer.

If you know what I mean and I think you do.

Dang it. Should have read the other comments.

I had been using onthegomap to calculate the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 1-mile distances on my block. For a year, I was absolutely crushing all my old records. Then I bought a measuring wheel and discovered onthegomap was off by about 10%. Looking at all my new best times, I saw that they, too, were about 10% faster. That was a sad day.

If a measurement *really* matters, you need to make multiple measurements and do that multiple times with independent methods.

They can, and could, always use pints. As long as the container also contains the measurement in SI. There has never been anything forbidding anyone from selling a 568,261 ml. beer, or also calling it a pint.

Brexiters just like lying.

I measured 2-3 times with the wheel to determine a margin of error, especially rounding corners. It was never off by more than a meter.

As a runner, this is just dumb on many levels.  Unless you are measuring the distance on a track, you're going to have variations in the distances the runners travel (which is why outside track runners are able to start forward and cut to the inside lanes early).

Just like any race, course navigation is critical, but unless you run the exact line that was used to measure the distance, you're going to either come in long or short of the distance.

CSB: Ran a half marathon in 2016, my GPS clocked me at almost 14 miles.  The course was pretty curvy and there were a lot of people walking the course, which required a lot of sideways movements to get around.  It's not like they moved the beer garden to me at 13.1 miles.  :(  (that would have been awesome.)
