It's slightly older than me. The Mario and Zelda games are up there. Both Startropics are too. Also some obscure ones would be here as well.

Super Mario Bros. 3

My younger self could speedrun through that game in 10 minutes since I played it so much. And of course Legend of Zelda.

Mario 3.  I mastered that game but skipped World 7 half the time because it pissed me off.

I've never beaten a Mario game.* Even as a kid I knew that platformer games were not my thing.

*Aside from the ruined friendships that the Mario Party games caused. Take that star and I'll cut you in your sleep!

I got one for Christmas in 1986. It was one of the earliest ones that came with ROB, or Robot Operating Buddy, which you used to play Gyromite, which came with it.

ROB was a stupid novelty that was an utter pain in the ass to use and as soon as I discovered that the second controller could be used to open and close the red and blue gates, ROB was never used for Gyromite ever again. Gyromite was a pretty bad game to begin with, really.

In terms of NES favourites, I have so many:

The Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Bros - all of them
Contra
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (I am one of only 19 people on Earth who enjoy this game)
Tetris
Metal Gear
River City Ransom
Ninja Gaiden (despite it's ridiculous difficulty at the end)
Double Dragon II
RC Pro Am

There's many more, but that's a start.

My mom hunted like a champion to get me one and we had NO f*cking money at the time. I had Mario and Duck Hunt as games and that was it. Was able to rent Metroid and Mega Man later on.

That was pretty much my whole Christmas... But man, it was so awesome and I loved every minute of it.

Thanks, mom. You rock.

Super Dodge Ball.

2022-10-19 9:10:01 AM
Vividly. I remember the first time my brother brought it from his dads place, I remember opening it up on Christmas morning, and I remember how farking cool it was to do a summersault jump in Contra. I remember TMNT vividly, and SMB2. I also have fond memories of The Black Bass, because my brother played it a ton because he was an angler.

I never had one.

I had a TRS-80 Color Computer and then a Sega Genesis.

2022-10-19 9:15:41 AM
The best game I had was Mario 3.  I usually blew through it quickly using warps, but one of my favorite Nintendo memories was taking an afternoon to actually play through every single level in one playthrough.

I had Metroid, but had no idea what the fark to do.  So I usually just put in the Justin Bailey code and killed crap for a few minutes before getting bored.

My favorite pick up and play for a quick game was Kung-Fu.  That music kicked ass.

The worst game I had in my limited collection: Werewolf.  The game looked cool and sounded awesome, but played like shiat.

You talkin' Zelda? Then who the hell else are you talkin' about? You talkin' Zelda? Well Zelda is the only one.

2022-10-19 9:16:39 AM
Blades of Steel inspired many a fist fight between my brother and I.

2022-10-19 9:18:48 AM
A few more favourites:

Metroid
Blades of Steel
Casino Kid (I have played and beaten this game north of 30 times)
Mega Man 2
Skate or Die 2

I was also incredibly frustrated by Metroid at the beginning. I wanted to like it so badly, but you're just lost on what to do.

Eventually I decided to give it an honest go and as it turns out, it's a great game.

Super Metroid, however, is one of the all-time greatest video games ever.

I was more of a Sega kid, but played plenty of Mario 1 and 3, TMNT 2, and two more obscure games (Athena and Dynowarz). And even though I didn't have the NES version as a kid (just the TG16 version), I've played through Bonk's Adventure quite a few times in emulators.

I've also discovered a bit of a fondness for the NES Pinball game while playing it in the Switch collection. Which is probably because I played Video Pinball on Atari 2600.

2022-10-19 9:24:17 AM
Oh, Kirby is a fun game too. Another one I didn't have in the original days, but grew to like in emulation.

2022-10-19 9:43:16 AM
My older brother and I shoveled the neighborhood's snow to get our Nintendo in 1988 or '89. First game I (we) ever beat was Contra. OG Legend of Zelda might be the most perfect game ever - I still play through it every few months.

// also, if you've never heard of/played Bad News Baseball, you're missing out
// rabbit umpires, fun HR animations (remember when those were a thing?), closeups of close plays, you can flatten opposing players (like if they're not good fielders and you rocket a liner at them)...

Over zealous sales guy sold Mom on the Sega Master System, so ended up at my friend's house often for the NES for Zelda and Mario especially.

Metroid was also pretty great, but actually played that series more on Gameboy and later consoles.

You mean you didn't enjoy writing down a couple dozen random digits for a password any time you wanted to stop playing a game?

2022-10-19 10:23:21 AM
Duck Hunt, because I went 49 rounds straight including 30+ rounds going perfect.
Mike Tyson's Punch Out, because I was the first to beat Tyson (on points, then TKO).
Top Gun, first to beat the game.
Tetris because there's something about NES Tetris that was cool.
and, of course, Super Mario Bros. because that game was fun as hell.

i had a sega. everyone else had nintendo so i could just use theirs when they worked. the blowing on cartridges and having to push them in exactly right to get them to work was always annoying

Marios
Legend of Zelda
RC Pro Am
Batman
Ninja Gaiden
Bases Loaded 2:  The Second Season*
RBI Baseball
Tecmo Bowl
Super Tecmo Bowl
Blades of Steel
and the big one:  Double Dribble

*game had a couple of weird mechanics
You could choose which players to play and which ones to bench based on bio-rhythms(?)
There was a post season which you got to if you won X number of games.  The season ended and post season began once you won that many games (or end of season if you didn't win that many games)

How are those obscure?  Both are considered classics?

I even managed to get 100% achievements in Crystalis.  I am one short on Faxadadu; I may go back to get it someday.

Other than Mario? I remember Contra, which I always used to Konami code to play because I couldn't get very far otherwise. I also remember renting that god damn Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game with that DAMN sewer level with the electric seaweed.

Then at some point my Nintendo broke and, for my birthday, I got upgraded to a SNES.

Classics?  Absolutely.  Obscure?  It was a niche/hard to find/obscure during the original release on NES.

mjbok: and the big one:  Double Dribble

oh god I remember how frustrating it was going up for a dunk, seeing the cut scene, and then hearing that awful clang noise letting you know that you missed the dunk.

Some of those early sports games were pretty great.  Blade of Steel, Baseball Stars, etc.

I'll always be most fond of Zelda, Mike Tyson's punchout, and the double Super Mario Brothers/ Duck Hunt cartridge.  Those are the initial three we got with the system for Christmas.

Baseball Stars was great. It still plays pretty well today. Hell, they even had a ladies team.

Ice Hockey always felt really responsive, too. It was probably the best hockey game until the NHL games on Genesis.

So many memories. I grew up poor, and my nextdoor neighbor and childhood best friend had an Atari and a Nintendo, so I would play his once in a while. I remember Baseball on the NES and and tank game on Atari.

When I was 5 or 6, my grandmother was a school bus matron (back when that was a job and had a pension) and her driver was this younger fellow with a big red beard named Craig. Craig was getting married and moving in the not too-distant future, and his future wife "didn't allow videogames" or some-such, so he gave me his NES, all his games, and his stack of Nintendo Powers.

I inherited all the staples; Mario/Duck Hunt, Mario 2, Zelda, Zelda II, Contra, Castlevania,TMNT, Punch Out, even the unliscened TenGen game etc. Nana wasn't so great at twisting the RF convertor into our 13 inch TV (which sat atop our broken TV  with the built in speakers/cabinet) so I learned how to do that very quickly by myself.

I was OBSESSED with Link and all his adventures, pretending to be in Hyrule when I would play outside. It didn't go untocied, and my mom would ask "Did you have fun with Zelda today?" (not on purpose, she really didn't know) And of course I would get mad and yell "ZELDA's THE GIRL!"

Many, many hours spent with my cousin in Contra (he was a perpetual life stealer) and trying to figure out Metroid's maze-like planet (Thanks Uncle Garry for JUSTIN BAILEY)...

and then Super Mario 3 came out. At this time my mom was engaged and my soon to be step-dad and her went in on a deli in Jersey City. It did, well? They had all the staples, sandwiches and even did catering. Nana would be in the back cooking, my mom was usually upfront and step-dad did management? Anyway - during the summer months they would take me to the store and set up the 13' TV on a small table and a seat and I would play the hell out of SMB 3. I was getting pretty good at gaming, and local kids would come into the store and watch me play and I would teach them the secrets I knew (warp whistles, etc.) - my mom wised up and started to tell them if you want to stay and watch, buy a drink or something.

About a year or two after that I started to get big into RPGs - I liked Final Fantasy, Crystalis, but really fell in love with the Dragon Warriors. My dad picked me up for the weekend and we went to Toys R Us and he bought me Dragon Warrior 2 (maybe it was 3?) and I was so excited. He lived 'upstate' so it was 2hr before I could get ti play it. I had been playing for a few hours that night, when my dad and evil-step mother started arguing. It was loud. Out of nowhere she came into my room, and turned off the NES and ripped the plugs out of the wall/tv. When I was done crying, I learned a life lesson that people can be cruel. Later, I would find out that she was mad I got a present from my dad and she didn't get anything from him that day.

NES probably culminated for me with Dragon Warrior IV, and I remember my dad buying that one for me too. My mom was in the hospital for something, and dad was taking me for another weekend, and I was so exited to show my mom the new game. She started to cry. I didn't understand then, but she was sad because she wanted me to have my dad in my life, and not have him just buy me things and take me once in a while for the weekends when he would show up...which he negged out on a lot of those.

Put many hours into the NES, and became a gamer for life.

I was 6, and yes I remember it. My dad, who usually did not do such things, spent my whole birthday laying on the living room floor playing Joust and Mario with me. He even stayed sober the whole day. It's one of my happiest memories.

I still have my original NES, and it's box, bought with my own money from doing chores, mowing lawns and so forth.  I think my favorite game was Baseball Stars because of the custom team creation and save function.  In terms of time played, it'd have to be #1.  But for those interested, my current list of games:

Adventure of Link
Baseball Stars
Blades of Steel
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Defender of the Crown
Dig Dug II
Donkey Kong Classics
Double Dragon II
Double Dribble
Ducktales
Elevator Action
Final Fantasy
Golgo 13
Heroes of the Lance
Hogan's Alley
Karate Champ
Mario Bros.
Pro Wrestling
Q*Bert
Ring King
Roadblasters
Rygar
Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt
Tecmo NBA Basketball
Tecmo Super Bowl
Tecmo World Wrestling
Tetris (Tengen)
The Legend of Kage
Track & Field
Track & Field II
Trojan
Ultima: Exodus
WWF Wrestlemania
WWF Wrestlemania: Steel Cage Challenge
Xenophobe *

* Xenophobe, here, is a special one because it was won in a contest from Sunsoft for posting a top 10 score on Spy Hunter for the NES
