Underrated by what? The list of underrated episodes rating them highly? Do I have to read the list back to front? I'm going out of my mind!

Wait, there are underratedepisodes?

ok, hot take: I really love "The Underdwellers" (the Sewer King, crocodiles, kids being captured episode) and "The Forgotten" (Batman gets amnesia, forced into hard labor and trapped in a prison box in the heat) episodes are underrated one that I love. I'll also put some love on ""It's Never Too Late"" (the Priest episode).

The Forgotten has fantastic music. It's a really good episode

BtAS episodes can only be underrated in relation to other BtAS episodes.

...and uncultured fools who have no appreciation for BtAS, but let's ignore their existence.

Pretty sure It's Never Too Late gets mentioned in all these threads at least once or twice.  It's well worth mentioning, partly because it's just so different from their typical fare, and shows Bats doing a lot more about crime than just punching it.

Honestly, most of the episodes on that list are pretty lackluster by the standards of the show.

I'm waiting for the definitive clickbait article: "The Top 75 episodes of Batman the Animated Series and 10 underrated gems that just missed the cut."

/the joke is that there were exactly 85 episodes
//the best jokes need 'splainin'

Batman Beyond is the direct descendant of Batman TAS and is severely underrated. It keeps the feel of the original series (which the new batman adventures does not) while having a solid action-plot-action-plot-action structure that keeps things moving

Is the top episode the one with they hillbilly genetic engineer and his silo rocket?

Every episode on this list was a solid meh. Except maybe Birds of a feather.

Plus, it's the closest thing we'll get to a proper Nightwing series.  Cyberpunk superhero is a fun genre mashup, and I'm a little surprised we haven't seen more attempts than just Batman Beyond and Marvel 2099.

I haven't watched any of these since they originally aired after school. I'm afraid checking them out now would just me a big let down.

That one episode where Batman comes out of retirement wearing the clunky armour suit to fight Ink is awesome. Ink is awesome. The show was supremely underrated. The Return of the Joker movie, however, is garbage.

For Batman: The Animated Series, one of my favourite episodes is actually from the WB years. Batgirl is killed by The Scarecrow. Jim Gordon learns Batgirl is his daughter and goes nuts. Ten minutes on Barbara's computer tells him everything about Batman, Nightwing and Robin and he goes after Wayne and the lot, even hiring Bane to take him down. It's awesome seeing just how fragile Batman's secrecy really is and watching Gordon lose his mind. It would have made an excellent one off comic or a series finale, but unfortunately it has to return to status quo and so it turns out to be Barbara's dream induced by Scarecrow's fear gas. But until that point, it's one of the tensest episodes.

I watched the season one DVDs around 2007 which would have been in my late 20's or early 30's and from what I remember it holds up pretty well to adult viewing. And the DVD commentaries are super interesting, like how they drew all the animation on black paper and how much adult content they would try to get away with.

The episode "See No Evil" has one of my favorite Batman moments:

Terry's rogues gallery is farking lame though.

Inque
Shriek
Curare
Kobra

The head of Mr. Freeze has a more compelling story than the entirety of those rejects.

But the hero is dull, a twerp with a power suit, who just exists as a counterpoint to Batman, and a backstory that's identical to The Long Halloween Robin anyway.

We can only watch Adam West try to disguise the chub when Julie Newmar purrs in his direction so many times.

Yeah. It's some of the finest animation I've experienced and that's not just nostalgia.  It's an American "kids'" show but it punches in an anime weight class. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll cheer.

I'm rewatching the series now on HBO Max.
It is not a let down.
