But the story hasn't been referenced elsewhere this week on MSNBC, or on CNN, or on Fox News.

CNN and Fox News are now controlled by Republicans. Crazy person at the top of them shoulda told ya.

The nationally broadcast morning and evening news shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC haven't discussed it.

Large numbers of those affiliates are owned by Sinclair, which presents a problem.

But honestly the main lesson here is that conglomeration and top-down commercialization of media leads to severe conservative bias.  It's something that's been known, academically, for decades, but I guess that's old news.

Gooood forbid we fund Social Security by removing the income contributions cap.

They can barely be bothered to address the fact that the GOP has discarded democracy in favor of autocracy.

That'd go against 30 years of tradition. Everyone knows by now that Republicans want to kill everyone but rich white dudes, and poison the earth so no one can enjoy it.

How does a +2 year long government shutdown sound?

At least Republican Jesus forbid...

Much like abortion, they've been saying they were gonna do this for decades.

But Democrats can act all surprised by this too when it happens and use it for fundraising now that it's too late.

I always got excited when I saw I passed the mark and started getting "more" in my checks at some point in the year but the whole system is farked and needs to not be built on the backs of joe paycheck when we've got billionaires, period.

Who can think about our economy being destroyed when a person born a boy may want to play on the girls soccer team!

A Bloomburg hatchet-job is not a "plan", Subby.  Get back to us when there's real news to report.

The GOP isn't going to be happy until the have a complete monopoly on bootstraps and are able to charge a fee by the minute for pulling time.

2022-10-17 5:44:46 PM
This will be similar to when the Greenspan Commission 'saved' social security in 1984. It will not affect anyone over 50 and be heralded as a great accomplishment and get Republicans re-elected in a landslide.

2022-10-17 5:45:51 PM
Subby understates things a bit. The GOP intends to destroy America, not just the safety net and economy.

Republicans hate us for our freedoms.

2022-10-17 5:45:53 PM
". . .the upshot for the American public is that a GOP House will try to slash the social safety net and plans to to capsize the economy if it doesn't get its way."

I had a history teacher whose favorite phrase was "damned if you do, damned if you don't", because it highlighted the often impossible choices leaders in history had to make.

This is the best example in the US in years. Of course, slashing medicare and or medicaid will tank the economy too. Goddam, we'd all be better off if the GOP leadership were actual bomb-throwers instead of just legislative ones!

2022-10-17 5:47:09 PM
They must expect the government to bail them out after they destroy it.  It always works.

I'm absolutely shocked that the "liberal" media is utterly blacklisting this story which would be extremely bad news for the GQP if it received wide coverage.

How would they go about doing that with just the House?

2022-10-17 6:00:56 PM
The republicans want to being us back to a time before black people could vote becuase things were better then.

It's nice to ignore that pensions don't exist anymore. That todays retiree has their entire retirement benefit in stocks and social security becuase there is no other retirement. Even the republicans shouting the loudest for Trump to return to office depend heavily on social security while simultaneously yelling how those poors that never worked a day in their life should get it.

People have paid their entire life into this ponzi scheme and just as the baby boomers are going into retirement republicans want to rip the fabric of support out from from under them. I don't see this going well. In a society that is increasingly split between the rich and poor not providing the promised benefits to the poor tends to leave them with nothing to lose if they were to decide the rich folks on high have taken away their means of living.  The haves will still have things to lose.

2022-10-17 6:02:36 PM
The media is owned by the very same people who are pushing this plan.  So, no surprise.

The house has the "power of the purse", they'll keep the government shut down until they get their way.

OK, fine, I clocked TFA...

If Republicans gain a majority following next month's elections, the outlet reported, they plan to use a future increase or suspension of the debt ceiling as leverage to force through "top priorities" like seismic cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and other social safety net spending. Failure to act on the debt ceiling would result in an economic catastrophe, experts say.

So they'd do the exact same stuff they've been doing for over a decade now?  Wow, why isn't this breaking news everywhere?

That's been GOP standard operating procedure for over a decade.  And has failed spectacularly every time.  How is it news?

I think the headline would be better as "Voters blindly cast votes for candidates who have promised they can get old people to die faster".  You would think that would be something most people don't like so the article is offering an explanation as to why this isn't a bigger issue.

I wouldn't say "failed spectacularly." Remember when we all learned about sequestration? Or "the sequester," as the media was fond of calling it? Or do you remember the time they came close enough to defaulting that our credit was downgraded?

Besides, the GOP is getting more and more looney tunes. Every time, they edge closer to financial armageddon. You see a string of failures; I see a terrifying trend of increasingly dangerous attempts.

2022-10-17 6:14:44 PM
The media is afraid that if they point out exactly what the Republicans will do the Republicans will attack them for being liberal. Proving that the media has lost all credibility because they're more interested in retreating into a comfortable echo chamber and keeping friendly contacts with the Republicans so they come on their Sunday chat shows rather than actual reporting.

I think we haven't heard about this from the media because it involves numbers and math. Most journalists don't like numbers and math.

Plus, there are so many f****** crises going on right now, this one will just have to stand in line and wait its g******** turn!

The same media that lavished free attention on Ex-President Useless farkwad in 2016 and reminded everybody of how sus Hillary Clinton is by repeating all the bullshiat Republicans have been shiatting out about her for 40 years? Then pointedly neglected to mention his obvious racism, assholishness and dementia during the 4 hellish years he was president?

I would also submit kakistocracy: a government run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens. Trump is all three of those red-flags.

Republican extremists on the SCOTUS: *guts reproductive services, to large-scale public outrage*

Republicans: *promise to gut Social Security and Medicare*

Corporate media: "There's no way they would actually go through with gutting Social Security and Medicare..."

Frankly, Biden should let the house have its temper tantrum and shut down, then order everything government related to continue as normal for national security reasons. The money behind all this is nebulous at best - if the executive says it's still moving, people get paid.
