"The cell allegedly wanted to kidnap the country's health minister and attack the electricity grid to spark a civil war and restore the Prussian monarchy."

She must not get out much these days. Germans in 2022 are less martial than Germans in 1932 by an order of magnitude. An attack on the power grid would spark bitter complaints to customer service.

That's what I don't understand about most of these "patriots (of whatever country)." Knock out my electricity, gas, or water, and I won't be pissed at the Government. I'll be pissed at the assholes that did it.

Remember, when a reasonably well-run democratic country sees people pushing for a return to a nonelected ruler, it's because they want something for themselves that they want denied to others and they think that they're going to be part of the in-group for the hereditary leader they sweep into power.

A competent dictator could be better than an elected legislature, but who decides? Instead of constantly rolling the dice every couple of years, there'd be only roll every couple of generations or so, and every bad roll would lower the odds for a good future roll.

What is it with all the old people wanting things the way they were back in the day. Putin, Xi, granny. Hell we've got a president that calls out to dead people in the audience. Still better than Trump. Things weren't so great back in the day.

An "enlightened monarchy" only works if the monarch is, in fact, enlightened.  Otherwise it is autocracy in fancy clothes.

To quote from  someone:  "Democracy is the worst form of government-- except for all the others that have been tried."

It's this weird belief among the right-wing that all the leftists (and by "left" they mean anyone to the left of actual Nazis) that we're all weak and scared and we'll just bow down as soon as there's a disruption in our lives.

Dictatorships deliberately project the image of confidence, consensus, and security, which can be appealing to people who are feeling frustrated with the 'chaos,' indecisiveness, and frequent policy reversals that come with democracy-based systems. A lack of objective media serves to reinforce the idea of the absence of strife.

Many dictatorships (like China) are aware of this perception, and tailor their internal and external propaganda accordingly.

Assuming he is stupid enough to want it. He would probably die if he accepted the job. By accepting the status quo he is merely super rich.
