If your parking area is on dry grass, it's not a parking lot, it's a fire hazard.

Err - I mean ok grass and shiat, but a mass fire sweeping 70+ vehicles - so fast none of them could be gotten out - with explosions?   From a dropped cigarette?  Uhh - sounds to me like there me be just a wee bit more to that fire than a carelessly dropped cigarette

Yeah. More likely they hadn't mowed the grass and somebody's hot muffler ignited the dry grass. A good arson investigator should be able to figure out the source and location of the ignition if nobody moved their cars.

You parked on a field of dead grass, in Texas, during a drought. What did you expect would happen?

I've lived in this area for over 40 years. I currently live 24 minutes from this location (according to Google Maps). These fires are not at all uncommon. These festivals have cars park in grass fields. The catalytic converter on a typical car is around 800 degrees. Like a previous commenter stated "You parked on a field of dead grass, in Texas, during a drought. What did you expect would happen?"

This. I've had family lose a house from it and know of several others in the area. I'd bet money this was just a hot exhaust though.

Really all that has to happen is someone parks after coming in from the highway. Catalytic converters can get hot enough to easily ignite dry grass and they take a while to cool down.

The local renaissance festival east of Phoenix uses a field that has been scraped-clear of all vegetation for this exact sort of reason.  It's literally acres upon acres of bare dirt, often fine-ground due to the vehicle traffic.  Makes for a dusty walk to the gates and one hell of a dust storm if the wind kicks up from the northwest, but better than a fire.

I'm having a little bit of trouble with the stray-cigarette theory.  Not that it's 100% completely impossible, but that when fire investigators made a real and serious scientific experiment to light a puddle of gasoline on fire with a lit cigarette they were not able to get it to work, to the point that the study exonerated a man convicted in an arson-murder.  Odds seem to be against stray cigarettes causing most fires even when accelerants are present.

Well, to be fair stray cigs don't ignite gas for shiat no, but they can ignite dry grass just fine, and burning dry grass can ignite whatever the heck it wants - often does.  We'll see I 'spose - 70 cars gone they're certainly not gonna be able to handwave it - there are gonna be serious business insurance investigators all over that even if law enforcement says whatever it's a cig

A field of dead grass is literally 100% kindling. Unlike a puddle of gasoline, it's literally the easiest thing to set on fire, ever.

It's probably a hot car exhaust, but a cigarette would definitely do the trick as well.

BTDTCSB: About 10 years ago, I was instructing at a driving school at PMP in Pueblo. It was September, so dry AF. My student managed to spin rather spectacularly way off of turn 3. This meant we'd gone past the dirt area right next to the track, and well into the uncut grass/brush. We sat there for a minute or two, waiting for a break in traffic so we could safely get back on. All of a sudden we hear the corner workers yelling, "Move your car! The grass is on fire!" And one of them was running out of the bunker with an extinguisher, while the other was vigorously waving a yellow flag so we could skedaddle back onto the track.

They got the fire put out, but it was the hot topic for the rest of the event.

You may surprised to find that pools of gasoline are not what makes up most grassy fields.

Yes, and my point wasn't that there was gasoline spilled on the ground.  My point, which I think was generally understood, is that 'conventional wisdom' often proves wrong when it's subject to actual scrutiny.

Just got home from a "pumpkin patch"

It is basically a fall festival. They vary in size and entertainment. The one we took the grands to today is 4d Farm in Cullman Alabama. They have all kinds of fun activities for children. Ziplines giant slides tractor rides etc and food booths. The grands favorite is the pig races and the giant slide thats about 150 ft long black corrugated plastic pipe on about a 40 degree slope. They also have "candy cannons" that every so often blast out a couple hundred pounds of candy high into the air for the kids to have. They have fair type rides live music etc. A 40 acre corn maze thats something different each year. And friday nights they do fireworks that are on par with large public 4th fireworks. They do a lot of good in the community throughout the year. Sponsoring kids for different things and making wishes come true for sick children.
