Shouldn't they have already been on a path to citizenship without being kidnapped by the agents of state officials?

These are not migrants, they are asylum seekers.
They were already on the path to apply for permanent residency and ultimately citizenship.

U visas are not a path to citizenship, Politico lies.

Summoner101: Shouldn't they have already been on a path to citizenship without being kidnapped by the agents of state officials?

They may have already been, with DeSantis' plot being to cause them to lose their chances at becoming citizens by forcing them to miss their immigration hearings in Not Massachusetts. He probably wasn't expecting that his doing so would cause them to become eligible for "victim of human trafficking" visas.

Speaking about that... Shouldn't he be arrested for interstate human trafficking?

migrants had sufficiently cooperated with its investigation and are now eligible to apply for "U" visas, a kind of immigration status for victims of certain crimes that occur on U.S. soil.

Can we maybe actually do something about the bolded part?

It's too close to the election DeSantis may run in in 2024.

After a few years of constant presence in the US, a U visa holder can apply for adjustment of status to green-card permanent residence.  It's not guaranteed, but it is a thing.  And if you can get a green card, you are on a path to citizenship.

This.

It's an election century, he's a rich white Republican male, and his actions didn't directly cause financial or bodily harm to Republican men richer and whiter than he is.

This is incorrect, this action by DeSantis does not fit the legal definition of human trafficking.

➡The asylum seekers are not having their labor exploited.

➡The children aren't being sexually exploited for money.

The law is very clear about what Human Trafficking is.

Yes a crime occurred and that is why they are eligible for U visas, but the crime is not human trafficking per the legal definitions.

If they're considered asylum seekers, doesn't that make them something other than nonimmigrants and therefore not qualify for U visas?

How is it "backfiring"? The sheer numbers are overwhelming the ability of the border cities to cope. Other cities taking up the slack is fine.

If CBP stops lots of migrants, we're being overrun and the border is not secure.

If CBP doesn't stop lots of migrants, they're not doing their job and the border is not secure.

Reverse this logic if a Fascist Republican is President.

It's a daily chart. Updated daily. It's from El Paso's daily migrant dashboard. It's what they are dealing with every day.
