Ya, because MS branded hardware is anything but cheaply produced garbage for the mouth breathers who have nervous breakdowns when asked to press the Any Key

Not saying all PC hardware is crap, just saying MS hardware is.
And the fact is they constantly copy Apple and suck shiat at it.

Remember when they tried copying the Apple Store? Looked practically the same, just a different logo and nothing cool. Only thing notable and distinct about it was what a miserable failure it was. Even more a miserable failure than the Zune (wanna-be iPod). At least a few dozen people bought Zune's, no one went to the Windows Store

That's not fair, Surface's are great hardware for putting Linux on

I still have a Surface 2, it's heavier than modern versions but it's still a very impressive tablet.

The Surface series has been very well made. MS has done some good stuff with their phones and the surface series. Hopefully the Surface doesn't go the way of Windows Phone.

I have a Surface Pro 3 that is still working. Not all MS hardware is crap.

The biggest difference between the MS tablets and Apple tablets is that the Surfaces are running full versions of Windows, which means they can act as a laptop replacement better than an iPad. I have an iPad Pro. I love it, but it can't replace my Macbook Pro. But what makes the iPad a poor laptop replacement also makes it a better tablet, so I like to use it as a tablet. I wouldn't like to use a Surface as a tablet as much.

If I had a limited budget and could only buy ONE device that had to cover both laptop AND tablet functions? I'd get a Surface over an iPad. That's the specific use case where I think it comes out on top.

I'm still using my surface pro 3 every day. It happily survives being thrown in my backpack and lugged around all day. It's a great machine.

The Surface Pro and the Surface RT both had full multitasking, something it took Apple three years to copy.
Full mouse support? Didn't the iPad only get that a year ago?
User accounts, so you can let your kid use it without them reading your emails, changing your settings and buying apps?
Still not available on the iPad.
Multi display extended desktop support? Still waiting.

If Apple launched a new iPad Pro tomorrow that could switch seamlessly into full MacOS and run full Mac software as well as iPadOS apps Apple users would piss themselves and line up for days to buy it.

Well guess what, that's what Surfaces do. And have done for a decade now.

As an owner of a Surface RT, I'll never own or use anything made by Microsoft again.

Lack of apps is what killed the RT, and marketing it as a "Windows" machine.
Technically it was a fantastic machine, years ahead of the iPad in every way. It was launched a decade ago and has a bunch of features the iPad still lacks. It even came with Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc, both full* desktop versions and the mobile app versions.
And you could plug a X Box controller into it and play FPS games on your big screen TV.

/*Almost. The desktop version of Word couldn't run macros for example.

I remember Microsoft Stores in malls.  They didn't look all that much like Apple Stores.  Mainly because all the people in them were dressed as employees, which was kinda strange.

I will begrudgingly admit that the Surface is quite a nice little device. It just isn't priced anywhere close to where I would find it tempting.

This is all that matters plus Microsoft's abysmal support for it.

Everything else is useless fluff. Who gives a fark about the iPad. I didn't buy an iPad. I bought a Surface RT that Microsoft farked me and every other RT over on not too long after launch. This after promising and promoting it as an effective and efficient portable Windows machine that would see years of support and all of our most used apps.

Haven't had any problems with Surface products, have a fleet of Surface Pros and Surface Books. We can't use iPads or Macs. They are cost prohibitive and none of our software is ported to them.

Back in the many many Windows 8 threads anytime I or anyone said that installing Classic Shell fixed all W8s problems and made it a great UI we were told that third party solutions didn't count. If it wasn't official then it couldn't be considered.
AFAIK Apple took five years to introduce am official keyboard/cover, long after Microsoft did it.
The keyboard they had from the start was a very non portable, non cover one.

There were even cartoonists joking about it, and predicting Apple copying MS.

Plus the Apple keyboard cover didn't have a trackpad, meaning using it wasn't as seamless as a laptop. And folding out the cover to prop the tablet up is really clunky compared to the Surface kickstand.
My first gen Surface RT has features that the latest iPad still hasn't got a decade later.
