Blink-182 is about as punk as Green Day

On one hand, they kind of did Matt Skiba wrong, when he came in and co-wrote "california" which was a great album that had the (expected) mixture of his & marks songwriting;  that album just plain worked.  And it kept the band relevant.  I've not seen anything recently where they give him any credit for his work the last few years.

On the other hand, when your closest friend and former band mate survives cancer & you've been estranged and reconnect, I totally get it.

Maybe we'll get both a great blink 182 album out of this, and Matt goes back to writing for alkaline trio & tours again.

Blink-182 is now classic rock.  I saw them at a free concert in 1999, with Los Fabulosos Cadillacs (they ripped it up!).

Also I assume alien conspiracy theory FOIAs are getting expensive so Tom Delonge needs to raise some cash.

I met this with a resounding "meh, okay".

I had no idea they released music after Tom left.  I'll check it out on Apply Music when I go to the gym this afternoon.

In the meantime, I still have Avril Lavigne for true OG punk rock.

I heard a rumour that Avril Lavigne will be opening for them. I'm not sure the world will be able to take so much raw Punk in one shot.

The stupidest part of all that doesn't even involve the UFO stuff directly. The simple notion that any government/military (current or former) employees with intel on anything confidential would look at a mall punk band that stretched dick and milf jokes into entire albums, and then single out the tall bassist and be like "oh, now this guy is someone I should share our biggest secrets with."

Sorry guys, both Green Day and Blink are, in fact, punk rock bands who started like all punk rock bands start, paying dues in shiatty DIY shows.  Selling a lot of records does not mean you are not a punk rock band.

FYI I don't enjoy either of those bands, so I am no fanboy.  But they are both punk rock bands, and probably more so than your band.

And for those asking the perpetual question: "Who gets to say what is punk and what isn't?"...

...me.   I do.

Boxcar

Song by Jawbreaker

You're not punk, and I'm telling everyone
Save your breath, I never was one
You don't know what I'm all about
Like killing cops and reading Kerouac
My enemies are all too familiar
They're the ones who used to call me friend
I'm coloring outside your guidelines
I was passing out when you were passing out your rules
One, two, three, four
Who's punk, what's the score?
Got a friend, her name is Boxcar
Cigarettes and beer in El Sob
Her hair was blue, now it's green
I like her mind, she hates the scene
My enemies are all too familiar
They're the ones who used to call me friend
I'm coloring outside your guidelines
I was passing out when you were passing out your rules
One, two, three, four
Who's punk, what's the score?
You're on your own, you're all alone
You're all alone, you're on your own

First time I saw Green Day, I couldn't get these guys out of my head. Billy Joe Armstrong bears a passing resemblance to Frankie Venom.

blink 182 is a bit more difficult to pin as legit punk. they are posers. ripping off NOFX was super trendy in the early mid 90s, when they started, and Blink even jumped ship for emo almost immediately after the 00s  pop punk wave. so I think they are trend hoppers more than green day was

I remember when pop punk started getting popular and the thrash metal bands who had been into oldschool punk and hardcore were amused.

Anthrax wrote "Packaged Rebellion" with lyrics describing it like "revolution on your sleeve" and "anarchy with a friendly face".  And Slayer released probably their most forgotten album, "Undisputed Attitude" with covers of all their favorite punk bands.  The message was "punk isn't supposed to make you feel happy while mom drives you to the mall".  It's supposed to be revolutionary and "if you say it, mean it, if you mean it, do it".

Green Day was punk enough for me, and I was old enough to see some original punk acts still performing in original lineups when I was a teen.  They were the third, or so, wave of punk and their only sin as far as I can see, was to be successful enough to become a polished mainstream act.  That's not new to punk though, Sex Pistols, Clash and Generation X/Billy Idol all became "sellouts," technically when their music actually charted and their records went platinum.  Actually, we all knew the Pistols were a sellout band from the get-go, as we actually had real music journalism back then.

I'm just looking forward to seeing where it all goes next with the kids, the new indie, lo fi, garage, and other bands are just terrific now, I don't care if it doesn't sound exactly like it did in the 70's as long as the spirit is there.

Hopefully any blink 182 fans that go see them now will finally realize that they've been listening to complete trash bordering on emo kidz bop.

Also, has anyone used the phrase "rock show" since the 50s? Do they sing about going to the sock hop too?

Absolutely terrible and as far from punk as celine dion.

I agree there.  I mean, I was... 12 when dookie came out? I thought it was amazing and was immediately buying their previous albums.  From there i was buying ramones, rancid, nofx, and anything else that i read or saw that had that sound.  plus i had just started to learn guitar and you can't exactly play megadeth in your first year.

I saw the same thing with metalheads a decade later, because among my friends bands like killswitch engage weren't hard enough.   when lamb of god was underground, they were sweet.  but when they had a couple albums under their belts and got a little exposure, then they sucked.

I could care less if something is popular or not, if I dig it I dig it.

I watched a documentary of The Go-Go's recently, and was surprised to find out they actually started as an L.A. punk band! It was a shock to see them unglamorous, and they really had no clue how to play their instruments or to sing. But then, once they became more polished and decided to become a more commercial band, "punk" people bad mouthed the band.

The documentary is cool. It revealed that The Go-Go's were the first successful all woman band to write their own music and play their own instruments. And that the band partied as hard as the male bands.

It's subjective of course, but the one I like is something like:

The value of the visceral over technical ability, while attempting to embrace the simplicity of bands like The Seeds, The Sonics, The VU and others.  The most seminal of the punk bands were probably The Stooges, so anything that is evolved from there qualifies for sure.

But the definition that probably works best is "whatever you say it is" and then we fight about it! lol

They were only heckled after they signed to a major label.  Theres so many grainy VHS recordings of their gilman performances showing those dudes were beloved when they were still on Lookout! records.

Other great bands that existed on lookout include ted leo & the pharmacists, & the uptones.
