More: Fail, Russia, Soviet Union, export of Ukrainian grain, new grand bargain, Russia's war, Presidents Mikhail Gorbachev, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, new deal

Not even the catering for the peace negotiations, which I would appreciate if you would put up personally.

I also support a grand new deal with Russia.  I just think Ukraine will have a much stronger bargaining position after the occupy Moscow and burn down the Kremlin.

You forgot to add the following subby: Not even keeping Ukraine, Belarus and Georgia away from joining NATO; which the west would appreciate if you signed off on.

Too late. The "bargain" now is for you to surrender, for Russian forces to withdraw over the internationally accepted border, and for your successor to start working on a schedule to pay reparations. We'll want a bunch of war crime investigations too.

Okay russia, here's the deal:
1) All russian troops out of Ukraine, now.
2) Unconditional surrender of russian government.
3) Putin sent to the ICC for judgement.
4) russia foots the bill for rebuilding Ukraine.

Do that and we let you live.

Long term, this is the only thing that matters.   Russia on the UNSC is a goddamn travesty.

Grand bargains with the US are for nations that aren't backwater third-rate shiatholes.

Justify why you deserve better treatment than Sudan.

The West used to bargain with the USSR. It may bargain with China.

But Russia is a has been power with a crap economy and a shiat military. The US barely respects France or the UK and both those second rate powers are orders of magnitude closer to being a world player than Russia in both economics and military tech.

Effective leaders who want a new deal reflecting updated realities tend to negotiate for those things.

Dictators who want their enemies to drop their guard PREtend to negotiate for those things.

"There is a new Russia, there is a new world, there is a new reality, and they want to have a new bargain," he said, adding that as a result, the entire global liberal order is facing a big test.

Well that shiat sure was vague.

People who have the upper hand in the real world get to dictate the principles behind a negotiation or a "grand bargain". What upper hand does Putin have? Nukes? That's not an upper hand; that's a death wish. No, the West has the upper hand here, and that means they get to dictate the terms of negotiation.

2022-10-10 12:02:19 PM
So what is this supposed "new deal"?  I mean I'm sure it would have been 100% bullshiat but it would be nice to include some actual details in the article.

I mean, he's technically correct.  We made those agreements on the assumption that "the new Russia" would be a strategic partner in good faith.  And to be fair, Gorby's USSR could have been.  But under Yeltsin?  Under Putin?  Nah.

You understand we don't want to conquer Russia. It's big, it's cold, there's nothing there.

You also understand that the national borders as they are now are how they are

It's a win either way as far as I'm concerned. So let's say it's her choice.

I think they they want the FA without the FO in their defined area, Baltic states to the Pacific.  I suspect they may even have designs on Finland but that would entail finding out.

it looks inevitable that Russia's war in Ukraine will continue for some time, and the question is how much damage will have occurred before negotiations resume

just to clarify here...
are we talking about damage to ukraine or russia?  b/c russia seems to be getting their ass beat at the moment.  this statement would seem to apply more to russia currently.

There's never been a "bargain" of the type he envisions with Russia, where we serve up other nations' sovereignty to him because he demands it. The policy has been and remains containment, helping our friends, and promoting & supporting democracy abroad.

How about we have a new round of post-USSR referenda in the various regions and oblasts of Russia? I suspect you've created a whole new fleet of independent Ukraines.
