Throw all your money at Ohtani after 2023. Give him all those AL East short porches and he's batting 50+ homers a year.

Serious question, is it against the CBA/league rules to give actual slivers of team ownership to players?

Presumably yes.

I know it's illegal in at least one other pro sport.

I'm no Yankee apologist, buy it isn't like they didn't try.   They made a crazy high offer.   But Judge bet on himself and he won.   These things happen.  It's part of contract negotiations.

I'm hearing rumblings that the Yanks will trade for Ohtani this offseason, and all the Angels owner is asking for is $50 million to finance a new mini-series on Netflix called "No, No, Nanette". Not sure a power-hitting pitcher would have much success in the Bronx though.

Whoever's buying Judge has 3 options -

1) Tell him to juice up and go after the *real* HR record
2) If he's already juicing tell him to stop being a pussy and juice harder.
3) If he's not juicing and they don't want him to, throw the Yanks under the bus and push Judge as the *clean* HR record.

Ohtani -would- benefit from playing in Yankee Stadium (and other AL East parks) because he primarily hits to right.
Ironically, the dimensions of Yankee Stadium actually -hurt- Judge, who primarily hits to left (the deepest part of Yankee Stadium.. and in Camden Yards.. for whatever reason the Orioles decided last offseason that -no one- should be hitting homers to left). Indeed, Judge hit more homers on the road than at home.

if they lose in the playoffs, even if they go to the World Series and lose, I predict the Yankees take advantage of that situation and let him go. If they win the World Series they'd be burned at the stake if they let him go.

So good job, Mr. Judge, you're going to get paid, but you'll only get paid in pinstripes if you go all the way.

I would very much like him to stay, but some small part of me wants to see the Angels give him $40M/yr to have the three best players in the AL and still suck

I reeeeally think they might want to change that soon. They've got some talent from the left side.

Then again they may be trying to give Rutschman the doubles record... guy was at a once every other game clip for most of the seaosn.

Also, New York can afford it, just keep Judge AND trade for Ohtani.
May as well get Trout, too.

As a fan of the team up the 5 freeway, I stare at Mouseland with disbelief.

Isn't the best part of Ohtani that he pitches and hits? Wouldn't that be better in the NL? Can a player be both a hitter and pitcher in AL?

The rules are universal now, DHs in both leagues. And with a rule tweak it's now okay for the pitcher to also be the DH, and once a pitching outing is over can remain in the game as a DH.

I think before this (or last) year a pitcher COULD REPLACE the DH in an AL lineup, but it would be treated just like the NL, the next pitcher is also put in the batting order.

and before the rule change, he would've been wasted in the NL. The DH means he can play every day with minimal wear on "off" days. In the old NL, he would either only play every 5th game, or they'd stick him in the outfield on "off" days, which would wear him down.

yes, the "Ohtani Rule" was implemented this year. Prior to this year, in games he pitched, once he was lifted as a pitcher, he had to be replaced in the lineup.
