Someone at the FIA wanted Max to win the title at Suzuka, and probably had money on the race.

Giving full points for half a race defeats the purpose of the sliding points scale they made after Spa last year. The drivers would have gotten fewer points if the race didn't have a red flag but was 30 laps behind the safety car. Hell, the way the rules are written, they could have two laps of racing, a red flag one second after the leader starts lap 3, and a restart at 2:59, resulting in a 4-lap "race" worth full points. That's definitely gotta be changed for next season.

And yet the points fiasco isn't the stupidest part of last night's farce of a race. Someone had the bright idea to put a heavy forklift on the track, on the racing line, during a near-zero-visibility rainstorm, with no visual indicators of any kind to signal the track obstruction above and beyond the truck's taillight which was only just barely bright enough for legal use on public roads. And the FIA wanted to punish Gasly for daring to think that his own life was in any way more important than the red flag speed limit.

The only part of the race which didn't suck was the actual racing.

I rip the guy so let me give him a bit of credit where I can, Christian Horner said that the points shouldn't have been given that way and he says it should be fixed in time for next season, calling the oversight in the rules "a mistake" according to the BBC.

At least it was discovered when the title was a forgone conclusion.

Gasly admitted that after passing the tractor, he drove too fast for the red flag conditions. He got penalized for that but the stewards acknowledged that he was rightly rattled by the discovery of the tractor (Gasly estimated he was 2 meters from hitting it, which is nothing in those conditions at even moderate speed). The FIA says they are reviewing everything regarding that to ensure it doesn't happen again. I suspect that they'll wait on sending recovery vehicles out there in rainy conditions unless it's an emergency situation where driver recovery needs to be immediate.

I mean, we are missing the big story. Latifi jumped from 21st to 20th out of 20. That's a hero drive right there.

I don't understand why F1 teams don't have spotters. FFS people would volunteer to be able to radio to the Ferrari pit. "Car X off at T5, on/off the race line, retrieval vehicle ON TRACK". Hell, they could have someone just watching the broadcast.

They would have a hard time placing spotters at some tracks and the production on the broadcast typically leaves A LOT to be desired.

True, but again it's not like they'd need to pay them. The only real investment is time.

And NBC is still the worst.

The F1 financial rules probably ban unpaid volunteers from working for you, otherwise you would get people who work for Mercedes Benz (the car manufacturer) or Red Bull (the drinks firm) doing some "volunteering" at the race HQ doing important things like aerodynamics or suspension design.

If a rule can be bent then F1 teams will turn it into a pretzel, see the current issues with Red Bull and the spending cap.

It can't be a coincidence that this is the same track where they also put a forklift of track that ended up killing Jules Bianchi. The marshalling team they have at Suzuka needs some retraining on what is and isn't sensible to do.

It's a shame, cause Suzuka is one of my favourite circuits to watch racing at, it's a good challenge for the drivers without being too dangerous.

Japan's attitude towards vehicles on a live track is extremely lax compared to other counties.  In Super GT or Super Formula races it is not at all uncommon to see a lift truck driving along the track covered only by local yellows.  In at least one case a tour bus was taking people on sightseeing tours around the track during a live practice session.
