So it's like SWGOH?

I never understood the whining about free games.  You guys know if you could get the full experience as F2P players, no one would pay, the developers would make no money and so no new games would be made?  You guys also know you're not required to play them and can quit at any time, right?

Diablo Immortal was a great game and after playing it for a few weeks, I deleted it.  Yay, F2P games.

We are going to see the 'in new game x it will take y amount of hours to unlock everything if you grind, can you believe it?'

Yes I can.

Lootboxes you pay for should be illegal.  Not frowned upon but literally the company is fined by the government for the practice.  At least for games kids can play. That's just gambling

Or, and hear me out...

You can join a local Kendo/Fencing/Boxing gym, and  go for real PVP for a flat rate.

My 15 year old daughter loves hiatting me with sticks.   It's bonding time.

Meh, new "games" with those f2p mechanics are whatever. Taking a game/franchise that WORKED and adding this BS is just greedy. Maybe sacrificing the previous fans in hopes of working over new ones might be more profitable, but it's not something I'll approve of or support, which puts me in the former group.

Time Gates, Loot Boxes, Gacha, Pay to Win, Season Pass - all of these should be huge red flags.

Overwatch 2 is running Destiny 2s playbook. Cut off the freebies, make it F2P and concentrate on the Whales.

I've been playing CoD Modern Warfare Remastered for 6 years because I enjoy the game.
I've never spent a penny of actual money and have every gun/skin/etc available.
I also have about 56000 salvage credits too!
I wish you could gift them to people!

Can't.  This is the only way major studios can still hide behind the "live service" fig leaf.

So the complaint is that it would take 5 years to unlock cosmetic items with no actual impact on gameplay whatsoever, that you can't even see yourself most of the time because it's an FPS? And they let you play the whole game, for free, any time you want, for as long as you want?

To a point I agree. But these companies have people designing their loot systems specifically to trigger a reward response in people with a certain brain chemistry. They hide behind the argument you're making when called on it.

Didn't care for the beta, but I'm loving OW2 since they got past the opening day(s) login delays.

I'm fine with the free to play model with a paid battlepass. The items you can pay for don't change gameplay so it's a level playing field in that regard.

It's appalling, but 5 years is pretty generous for this genre. At least the game will still be around in 5 years. Oftentimes these calculations stretch way past the game's expected lifespan.

You know, you could play a free game for free for 5 years, and still get free stuff!

Not only that, but you would have been playing a free game, for free, for 5 years!

The outrage!

/I have been playing Hearthstone, for free, for more than 5 years. And they keep adding new stuff that I haven't gotten yet. Its as if I could play this free game, for free, forever, and still never get all the free content, for free.

F2P games are grind-fests. Doesn't matter if it's Overwatch, Raid, Warthunder, World of Tanks, etc, they're all really aimed at a small segment that's going to spend hundreds of hours and dollars over many years on the product, not the bulk of the free playerbase.

That's where I got the idea.

It's easier to start with solutions that are demonstrably working on issues than to think of new stuff that might not work.

I like that people are complaining about items which they can grind out for free over the course of time as a 'hey, you're still playing...cool' thing if the title is even still supported years from now (if you want to look at it that way*), meanwhile there's a small group of us literally begging Bugbear to let us give them more money for *any* sort of update to a game or new game even.

I guess my point is that the difference between various games/developers fan bases strikes me as very odd at times.

*though we all know it's to get you to spend money on them anyway...

There would still be games. Honest, proper games of the sort that have been sold since the 1970s and still often are today. Pay once, get everything, play forever. As games should be.

What would disappear are the predatory, manipulative, grind-filled games-as-a-service digital sewage and the walking buckets of filth who profit from them. Those disappearing would only make the world a better place.

By the time you complete those 5 years of grinding they'll have added 1000 more years of stuff to buy.

How does that square with CCGs like Magic or Pokémon? Or sports cards? Why would those not also be loot boxes? Is it the fact you receive a material good?

The difference is that loot boxes, when they, or their contents, are tradeable, allows for online gambling.

When you use loot boxes/the contents there off, as a virtual currency, you circumvent the requirement for registration, control, and taxation of gambling.

If loot boxes, or the contents, aren't tradeable, the laws doesn't have an issue with it.

I suppose you could have a real store that dealt in mtg cards for purposes of gambling. I don't believe that has ever happened though.
