People have been doing this for decades. My grandma got some call in the 1990s about this. But she knew I was too savvy a criminal to get caught and use some bullshiat intermediary like the scammer suggested, because she taught me well.

Smoking GNU: They're both dead, so either one of them calling me would be grounds for instantly blocking the number.

My mom called me up one day all pissed off.  Apparently my 'son' called her up needing bail money as he was in jail in NYC.  She was all hacked off because he went on a trip there and didn't tell her he was going (at the time he was living with them for a couple of months out in CA.  By sheer coincidence he had left the day before to go up into the mountains for a long weekend of camping).  She was so pissed that she chewed my 'son' out for flying across the country while he was absolutely broke and told him that he could just rot there for a few days...

"Uh mom, didn't you think it was a little strange for him to do that?  It was a scammer.  If you ever get one of those calls again, ask him what the name of his first dog was..."

"Oh..."

/he still got chewed out when he got back from camping
//he said it was a rather surreal conversation with her yelling about NYC and him having zero idea what was going on.
