The University just said to stay away from the building where the shooting happened. Prof thought that did not affect his class. Then the University canceled all classes. As soon as that happened, the prof canceled the exam.

My dad was in college when Kent State happened, and he always brings up how one of the victims was just walking to class. That was the most infuriating part for him, b/c he figured that could have been him.

I was more commenting on the state of the country where in there was an active shooting in university and everyone just kinda shrugged.

Shootings aren't news in the US, they happen all the time.

Obviously, the solution is more firearms. Strap on an AR-15 like a Real American Patriot (tm).

You get an extension on the exam if you're delayed because you've engaged the active shooter in a running gunfight on the quad.

Extra credit if you terminate the threat without downing too many of your fellow students.

K-6 A mile and a half each way with.... Yes a hill and snow in the winter.
School was only closed if there was a foot or more of snow.
Though it was New York back in the 60s/70s there wasn't any active shooter issues...
Maybe BB guns but...

As a former instructor who taught second and fourth year Genetics, here's my take:

1. It is entirely reasonable for someone to not want to go to campus if there is an active shooter. If a student was to appeal a mark in these circumstances I can't imagine the prof's department, faculty, or the university senate backing him.

2. He teaches Comp. Sci.. While people who teach in some disciplines (*cough* Psychology *cough*) habitually complain there's "only a limited number of questions they can ask" as an argument against having make-up exams, I rather doubt someone teaching Comp. Sci. can make the same claim.

3. Unless there's only 10 students in the class you're going to have a make-up exam anyway. So, if you have 20 students take the make-up instead of the usual two or three, who cares? The classes I taught ran from 200 to 1500 students, so we normally set two make-up exams.

So, even if the Uni hadn't closed the campus, what's to gain by digging in on this issue? Yes, there's lots of students who look for any excuse to delay exams, but these students ALWAYS make excuses. Pick a better time to nail them, I guarantee they'll give you (or one of your colleagues) many more opportunities. I gave out plenty of zeros for missed exams and assignments, but I picked my battles and didn't fight over petty sh*t.

During a Database class during my MS, I was stuck a state over after attending a funeral because my timing belt snapped and FARKED my engine.  This was the day before my midterms and there was no way I could get back in time. I called the teacher and explained the situation.  He said, "No problem, take it next week during my Monday office hours."  I did and all was well.

I wonder what does more long term damage to young children's psyche: Nuclear attack drills or active shooter drills.

I mean you'd think automatically the shooter drills. They're more visceral and intimate than a vague sense of total destruction. On the other hand, Boomers. Those nuke drills really screwed them up good.

I'm not going to side with him on his Weeners, but publishing his email and phone number online was a shiatty thing to do. Especially without actually acknowledging that the exam got canceled

I don't think it was wrong to call him out by name, but full doxing people is always dangerous. Yeah he was a dick, but he made a mistake and you shouldn't be subjected to random assholes from social media flooding your phone and emails with screaming random bullshiat

The reply is a little disingenuous the parts maybe, but we can switch this around and try to be human and say, well he made a mistake, he did something stupid, and we all do stupid things. Doxing is just bad practice, it's not cool to put somebody's phone number basically encouraging others to go harass them

Prime Boomer here and I would've taken any opportunity to miss school, so this guy is nuts.   For the record, I did walk to school and back the first 9 years, but it was only uphill one way, and it wasn't even a mile.   We didn't have shooters but we had plenty of punks with knives.  In middle school lunchbreaks your choices were a crappy '60s comedy with Jack Lemmon or going out in the playground where any number of things could kill you.

During the '68 and '69 riots. the city simply closed the schools two weeks early.   The only active shooters we had to worry about were Ohio NG troops and they were 35 miles away in May 1970.

This is why I support AR-15s for everyone. The more people walking around with full auto AR-15s and 400 rounds of ammunition the safer we will be.
