a) What national-level democrats are actually vilifying America?
b) Why are patriotism and acknowledging current and past problems mutually-exclusive?
c) Have you ever heard a democratic politician give a speech about America? They get kind of cringey with how much they want to say it's awesome, has great ideals, and has done spiffy stuff, even if they're acknowledging shiatty stuff too. I understand that this is a bit redundant with a), but seriously, are you sure you haven't confused the Fox News caricature of Democrats with reality?

/ Not even going to touch the nationalism bit, I suddenly feel tired

He has a point that farkers won't even consider. I've said before that immigrants view Democrats as being Anti-American complainers.

America is fantastic. I love being an American, despite a few loud textbook racists. Women have incredible freedoms here and immigrants and have incredible opportunity. Immigrants come here and succeed.

If you don't believe me, travel to a non western country some time. If you think to yourself "I wouldn't travel to some backwards country" then you've automatically limited yourself to basically white countries and might as well vote for Trump come 2024 and avoid sh*thole countries.

Republicans ARE the reason we are in this mess, Ukraine was blackmailed by Trump, Trump was protected from impeachment for it by Russian assets in the GOP, Putin's resulting war on Ukraine is the best example of the illusive "collusion" that the GOP wants everyone to not see.

It was treason from 2016's "Russia are you listening".

Martian_Astronomer: b) Why are patriotism and acknowledging current and past problems mutually-exclusive?

Because conservatives are stupid and can't think beyond bumper-sticker thoughts about anything.

"My country right or wrong" is a very poor shortening, but it's how they think.  The full quote is: My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right. They think in mindless nationalism, and admitting when you're wrong always means you're weak. Where in reality, it takes a strong person to admit a mistake and work to make it right.

2022-10-06 6:32:36 PM
Oh, fark off. Acknowledging that there are and were some big flaws in our country and society isn't not being patriotic. I'm trying to achieve the promise of a more perfect union

You know why a lot of us don't wrap ourselves in the flag and tear up at the national anthem and do all of that performative shiat? Because we've seen what the people that do that are like. They were telling us that we're "either with them or against them" if we didn't want to bomb Middle Eastern countries and myriad other horrific bullshiat while screaming that we're the good guys because we declared it by fiat. That type of respect is earned and resting on our laurels for the good things and ignoring the bad things doesn't cut it.

"Patriots" ruined the brand of patriotism, even without all of the nationalistic garbage thrown in.

The irony of all of this is the subby is almost certainly an upper middle class pasty white boy.

It's obvious that he's also neo-communist accelerationist, praying for Republicans to get elected in the belief that this will trigger a painless (to him) revolution. Because literally nobody who isn't a crazy asshole thinks that a Republican electoral win wouldn't make our flawed society even worse. But asshole here mocks the idea, saying it's (sotto voice: those eeebil) "Democrats" who "assure us" that the sky is blue.

Eat a bag of dicks, subby. I'm no fan of this "compromise with people who are unwilling to" missive you've found, but trying to appease kook neo-communists like you doesn't work either.

"Immigrants" is way too broad a brush. You're right that SOME immigrants view Democrats as the not-loving-America party because Democrats don't have enough flags.

The answer isn't to change stances or policies. The answer is to just add more flags.

"What happens when you combine freer trade, shrinking unions, Wall Street bailouts, growing corporate power and the abandonment of campaign finance reform? You shift political and economic power to the wealthy and you shaft the working class.

Adjusted for inflation, American workers today are earning almost as little as they did 30 years ago, when the American economy was a third its present size.

Biden's agenda for working people - including lower prescription drug prices, paid family leave, stronger unions and free community college - has followed the same sad trajectory, due to the power of big money. Big Pharma has blocked prescription drug reform. A handful of Democratic senators backed by big money have refused to support paid family leave. Big money has killed labor law reform.

Democrats could win back the white working class by putting together a large coalition of the working class and poor, of whites, Blacks and Latinos, of everyone who has been shafted by the huge shift in wealth and power to the top. This would give Democrats the political clout to reallocate power in the economy - rather than merely enact palliatives that paper over the increasing concentration of power at the top.

But to do this Democrats would have to end their financial dependence on big corporations, Wall Street and the wealthy. And they would have to reject the convenient story that American workers care more about cultural issues than about getting a better deal in an economy that's been delivering them a worsening deal for decades."

Why won't the Democrats compromise? LOL

All the Republicans want is to criminalize (or further criminalize) women's rights as adult people, LGBTQ people, uppity black people, you know, the usual.

Why oh why won't Democrats see reason on these things?

In many ways it isn't. Just as an example, my cousin in Rwanda had to take her kid to the ER a couple months ago, and she didn't have her government insurance card with her (else it would have been free), so she had to pay a full US$20 for the visit.

Martian_Astronomer: b) Why are patriotism and acknowledging current and past problems mutually-exclusive?

Because patriotism is literally defined as loving and supporting your country. That means that calling yourself a patriot is stating that you love and support the country that we actually live in. Once you acknowledge the current and past problems, starting with the slavery and genocide, expressing love and support for it is pretty farked up. Saying you don't mean the real country, you mean the imaginary version in your head makes it worse if anything.
