Thumbs down for backing into the batting title by sitting out the last game

Unwilling to risk the batting title he so coveted, McNeil sat out the first seven innings

Ted Williams calls you a little coward biatch, then goes 6 for 8 in a doubleheader.

I think I had seen that it was a Buck Showalter decision, not a Flying Squirrel decison

I thought the same. Then was confused when it wasn't.

Mets have playoff games tomorrow. Getting McNeil two days' rest is fine.

He still sat and then only came into the game when the title was assured.

I think it's funny that you think players determine the lineup.

Are you telling me that if Jeff McNeil said "I wanna play today" Buck would have shot him down? That game mattered for playoff seeding and the Mets didn't want the batting champ to play?

SuperChuck: That game mattered for playoff seeding and the Mets didn't want the batting champ to play?

It didn't. Braves won the NL East the night before and both the Braves and Mets were guaranteed at least 4th seed for weeks. The only other thing that would've mattered would be home field in the World Series if they faced the Yankees specifically, but the Yankees had already lost by the time the Mets game started.

Then why did he go into the game in the 7th inning?

Dunno. Just correcting that the game was meaningless in terms of seeding.

Fair enough.

It's a stupid argument anyway.

He went in so that Lindor could come out and get an ovation from the fans. The Mets' bench is weirdly full of DHes right now, so McNeil was the only infielder who could come in for this purpose.
