Well they got all weird and did "Revolution 9" in 1968.  Otherwise, not sure.

I respect the Beatles' achievements and contribution to the lexicon of music n wotnot, but I don't particularly enjoy their stuff.
That said, there's a scene in Mad Men where Don comes home and listens to a Beatles record his hot, young ladyfriend has recommended.  He doesn't like it, and turns it off, and it's quite a powerful scene... clash of cultures / old vs new / ageing and losing touch.  And it's a really good track, but I can't remember what it is...

here endeth today's self indulgent homily

So, from TFA, apparently Ringo was actually The Beatles 2nd and 4th drummer. They only let him play maraca and tambourine on their first single, Love Me Do.

My new bit of trivia for the day. Thanks subby.

The Beatles were okay, I guess, but very derivative of The Monkees...

The only band more overrated than The Doors.

Love Me Do and Tomorrow Never Knows were released 4 years apart.

I would challenge the "Beatles were overrated" crowd to name another band that experienced that kind of artistic growth in such a short period of time.

Hell, everything the four of them recorded together was done in less time than elapsed between Boston's second and third album.

Martin immediately told them what needed to be done: He said Ringo Starr wasn't good enough for the band.

Oops!

Wow also on this date Dr. No was also released in theatres. The British were really killing it on October 5, 1962.

The Beach Boys went from "Surfin'" in 1963 to "Good Vibrations" in 1966.

To be fair, that was because of legal BS going on that took a while to play out. But I mean, even side 2 of Don't Look Back was starting to wane in terms of what the band was doing, let alone Third Stage, let alone Walk On.

\ fun fact, Boston was my first rock concert on the Walk On tour, when they convinced Brad to come back.

I think the Beatles being overrated is a Gen X thing. They certainly aren't on any of my play lists and outside of a few songs I couldn't tell you if it was them or not. They just don't matter to me. Much the same way Elvis doesn't hit my radar. I'm too young to care.

Wasn't it Pete Best that he objected to? And then Beatles brought in RS but Martin had already engaged a trusted session drummer for the recording

To be fair, that would be a very long way down a list of Beatles songs you'd recommend to someone who'd never paid any attention to them before

There have been discussions about amount of luck they had in getting their recordings made. They were a successful club act in Liverpool and Germany, but they only got audition because Brian Epstein was an impt client who bought a lot of records for his shop.

Once they got a chance, they flourished. But if they'd had anyone else than Epstein, they may not have got over that first hurdle.

It's called LSD.  Lennon discovered it in '64. It and I'm sure other drugs facilitated a move away from their conventional sound, the 3-verse 2 1/2 minute love song you can dance to, aimed at 16-year old girls.   That gave them their popularity, thank god they got tired of it.

And they were getting some competition from the Stones, who by 1965 were getting almost as much time on the charts, with songs not about hand holding.

It's the farking article I'm objecting to.

My understanding is that Ringo didn't get a chance to drum on first recording of Love Me Do bc George Martin had already decided that Beatles drummer Pete Best wasn't up to the job. He didn't disparage Ringo, which is what article says.

Just a bit of trivia, not really worth arguing about

Didn't their lead singer die in a gunfight in Deadwood? Heard he was shot in one of the Datkotas, so I'm sort of grasping at straws, here...

If you haven't seen it, I recommend watching "Yesterday". A well done movie, in my own humble opinion.

Good movie, but the only thing that annoyed me was the meeting with John Lennon. If it had been me I would have been extremely curious to know where the divergence point was. Pretty sure I would have tracked down the other 3 guys as well to see what happened to them. A whole different movie of course.

That's the sequel. It's gonna be called A Day In the Life.

Yes, that's their shortened name.
They were so impressed with the Beach Boys that their original name was The Beatle Surfers.

If any of you are truly interested in understanding The Beatles...who they were, where they came from, and what a miracle they were...read Tune in: All These Years by Mark Lewisohn. It's the first book of a trilogy that covers the period of their childhoods in Liverpool up until New Year's Eve 1962. It's a fantastic book.
