The YouTuber has a great mindset here, and I stumbled across his video addressing it yesterday in which he takes the opportunity to shout out several other smaller digital content creators. Seems like a decent guy.

As for the sketch in question...it's really close.

American?  Those old blues guys would have been a memory without the Brits. . .Zepplin had to steal their material from someone.

Went to watch the season premiere episode last night on Hulu and it's no longer on streaming. Apparently you now have to have live hulu to watch SNL. So unfortunately back to not watching SNL at all, and I actually enjoyed the live threads here.

Once you get past the weird rotoscoping, Haver has some really funny bits.

His "Groomer Joker" is probably my favorite but this one's pretty funny too.

"pretty alarming," while allowing that the twin concepts could be a case of "parallel thinking" or simply a "wild coincidence."

He's being waaaaay too generous. Michaels is now running a full blown plagiarism operation.

Ugh, good to know, but wont be doing that. Guess I'll try to catch it live through a shared youtubetv account, but doubtful. Well, it was fun getting back in to watching it while it lasted.

I highly doubt it was a coincidence.

2022-10-05 1:40:31 PM
Nah, they stole it, made it painfully unfunny, and stretched it out too long for good measure.

2022-10-05 2:00:51 PM
yeah i find they stole it, cause most thieves are generally lazy.

all they had to do was change that the son wants to go to art school, or get a Humanities degree instead of dance.
Or have the mom side with the son maybe.

Just one of two minor easy changes would have  given them the ossification/disconnection enough to claim being original on their own parallel lines.

But as lazy is, lazy can't be asked to put any actual effort in and so yeah a 1:1 obvious copy is what we got here.

just as good stats tracking can out a cheater in chess, this easily appears as  good as those stats i'd say.

the show of lazy is the real tell tale here.

They upload the cold opener and weekend update on youtube at least.

2022-10-05 2:13:14 PM
Who cares? SNL sucks. It basically always has.

They have some talented people, though. I think the show would be *much* better if they made it a half-hour show, and dumped the "live" aspect. It would give the writers more time to write good sketches, instead of worrying about having to fill 70 minutes every week. Hell, is there every any more than 10 minutes worth of actual funny sketches in any episode anyway?

Just make it a pre-taped weekly sketch show.

2022-10-05 2:19:24 PM
SNL has a habit of mining ideas from youtube. Beyond that, imagine you're an SNL writer and you just had 6+ months off to think, and *this* garbage is what you came up with for the premiere. Unbelievably lazy writing, and yeah some of it's ripped off as well.

2022-10-05 2:26:31 PM
the guy should do a sketch - hell, a whole series - where the main character is a fat oafy well meaning dimwit except this time, make his wife *really* hot.  they can have simple misunderstandings - like the time he spent the rent money at the casino, or he finally realizes the meaning of 'emotionally available'.

doesn't everyone hate those poop bears? i wanted rid of them from day one. instead they've hung on like an infected, idk, some kind of painfully irritated swelling... like some kind of pain in the ass... like an ass-located, swollen, painful irritation... like a hem- ahem-
excuse me
*ahem*

Bleh, unless there are whole sections ripped off verbatim "Charmin Bears child wants a new gig" isn't exactly the hardest concept to think of. There are sooooooo many farking sketches on Youtube you're going to run into parallel thinking on one of them unless they're directly ripped off from your life or something

And if you're lucky enough to be some rando Youtuber who happens to have a sketch with a similar premise as one on SNL then, lucky you I guess. Enjoy the free pub

The entire premise, the son wanting to be a dancer, the jokes- all very similar. You seem like a person who thinks a premise is the same as a novel.

If a premise is the same, that's understandable. If every single detail is the same, that's a little more questionable.

American?  Those old blues guys would have been a memory without the Brits. . .Zepplin had to steal their material from someone.

In the beginning
Back in 1955
Man didn't know 'bout a rock 'n' roll show
And all that jive
The white man had the schmaltz
The black man had the blues
No one knew what they was gonna do
But Tschaikovsky had the news, he said
Let there be sound, and there was sound
Let there be light, and there was light
Let there be drums, there was drums
Let there be guitar, there was guitar
Oh, let there be rock!
And it came to pass
That rock 'n' roll was born
All across the land every rockin' band
Was blowin' up a storm
And the guitar man got famous
The business man got rich
And in every bar there was a superstar
With a seven year itch
There was fifteen million fingers
Learnin' how to play
And you could hear the fingers pickin'
And this is what they had to say
Let there be light, sound, drums, guitar
Oh, let there be rock!
One night in a club called the Shakin' Hand
There was a 42 decibel rockin' band
And the music was good and the music was loud
And the singer turned and he said to the crowd:
"Let there be rock"

Amen.

Lsherm: If a premise is the same, that's understandable. If every single detail is the same, that's a little more questionable.

Premise, execution, cadence, beats.  The first one will very rarely be unique or original if you look far and wide enough.  The next three are where the damning evidence comes in.

I remember Dane Cook hosted SNL once, and in his monologue literally did his own version of a Debby Downer bit like he'd never seen the show. It was literally like, "Hey you know how there's always one friend in the group that always brings people down with some kind of depressing observation or comment?" etc

I have never heard of George Clooney being accused of sexual assault...

ME:  that's because George Clooney looks like, well, George Clooney, whereas Ben Roethlisberger looks like that weird fat kid in your 10th grade math class, who drew pictures of guns, knives, dragons, and skulls on his notebook.

I will go to my grave
, about how SNL "found" this post I made, a month later.  Weekend Update:  Colin Jost, "in other news, Ben Roethlisberger accused of rape.  But....come on.  Doesn't he look like the kid in junior high, that drew pictures of dragons, skulls, guns, and knives on his Trapper Keeper?"

I leapt off the couch.  "THAT 'S MY JOKE!"

wife: "OK.  I'm going to bed, don't forget we have dinner tomorrow at my mom's. Love you."

The only people more mid 2000s than Mencia was Cook and Chappelle. Or Jeff Foxyworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, Bill Engvall, Ron White, Jeff Dunham, Sarah Silverman...

Man, I watched way too much Comedy Central as a young formative asshole.

Anyway, Mencia and Cook are 2 sides of the same shiatty coin. You can't really think of one, without the other. At least I don't.

I think I can buy the parallel thinking argument here...

-I don't think it's a particularly original idea to think that it's weird how obsessed these bears are with pooping.
-From there, it's a reasonable progression to get to the point where the patriarch of the family is even more obsessed with pooping than we actually realize, with him actually working in the industry due to his passion.
-From there, it's not a huge leap to get to the idea that (like all kids once they reach a certain age) one of the children may be pushing back against his parents' wants and desires.
-The art school thing seems like the biggest coincidence of the bunch, but even then - if the joke is going to be that the son is pushing back against the role his dad picked for him, what would be the polar opposite of working at a toilet paper factory? Falling on a love for dance/drama/art seems like a reasonable punchline to come to.

If the creator doesn't have an issue with it than I don't. He's probably even self aware enough to realize he may have inadvertently done the same thing at some point... it just happens IMO.

I can't believe people make a point of watching SNL live anymore.   I know it's obituary has been written a bunch of times in the last 45 years but, even when I bother watching recent sketches on YT, they suck.  The only time they get any sort of attention is when someone breaks.   If they wanted that, just bring back Fallon
/tl;dr just end it. It ain't been funny in years

Yeah, here's the thing about writers: They steal.  All of 'em.  Not "homage" or "Influenced," they just flat out farking steal, from F Scott's "Great Gatsby" ending to the latest overworked schlub at SNL.  It's how you pay the bills, and you have to produce daily or you get fired, so you steal.
