We have no idea what is being over or under fished as warming waters shift marine life habitats around the world and, as the article points out, so many countries keep absolutely no records of catch or availability. Critters all over the planet are shifting migration paths, seasonal/traditional 'wintering' and reproduction numbers. On land, in the water and even the insect population. We really have no clue at this point. Critters are populating in areas that have never seen them before. We don't even know why marine mammals are beaching themselves in increasing numbers. As usual, humans are screwing up all the other living things from 'natural' to 'biblical plague' behavior.

So for once we're not driving something to extinction and someone's pissed about it.

Teach a fish to captain a nuclear submarine to protect itself from extinction.

Someone's quarterly wasn't as good and that meant he couldn't get it up that night.

This is how we got Somali pirates the water off the coast got overfished and the fishermen had to use their boats for something else. Do you want more pirates?!

Invite a man to sit at your fire, and he'll be worm for the night
Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life

They found garbage at the bottom of the Mariana trench.

There was a report the other day on the BBC that discussed Chinese commercial fishing and how aggressive they've become.  They'll sail a fleet of ships right up to (and sometimes into) another country's exclusive fishing zone and strip the area bare.  That in turn undermines sustainable harvesting by the adjacent country.

The big change is that they'll send a fleet of small boats, along with a large escort that can store the catch and additional fuel, reducing the need to sail back to China.  They'll work an area until nothing is left and then move on.

Seems like it might be time to extend exclusive economic zones from its current 200 nm limit.

I thought the underfishing was caused by captains and companies not going out unless they were damn sure profits and costs were stable if they caught the expected amount.

200 nanometers is incredibly small. Yeah, they should extend it.

/I know

Yeah I was surprised we are actually on the ball on something. And "under fishing" wouldn't seem to be a problem truly worthy of the article focus.

Sounds to me like any attention needs to go toward IUU policing. It also sounds as though the resulting price rise might be a net gain in the industry.

There is no such thing as sustainable commercial fishing.
