I keep butter in the freezer but do not seal it in a ziploc bag as suggested by TFA. Is that step necessary?

Didn't read the article, but my guess is it's so no other flavors get imparted in it.  Just keeping it in the wax paper (if you're buying sticks) should be fine as well.

Never had a problem with butter in the freezer. Wrapped in waxed paper and in a sealed box, you don't need anything more. I suppose if you buy it "farm fresh" in lumps, yeah.

Sometimes I freeze it in freezer bags, other times I just put it in the door of the freezer.makes no difference in the taste or texture. I just let it thaw in the fridge first before using
