For a while now many economists were pushing the idea that the global economy should be a huge free market.

Now that Russia and the Saudis are starting to either dole out or withhold one of the world's most essential commodities coontil renewables kick in anyway) depending on political considerations, it seems the idea of the global free market has just died.

Italy was already buying Russian gas at a negotiated bargain price then reselling a lot of it at market prices to other countries. They had a pretty sweet deal.

Physical reasons too. If they shut in their wells, there is no guarantee that they will be able to restore full flow again.

So much this.  Shutter those pipelines and the cost and timeline, plus lack of access to western services means a shutdown becomes permanent for all intents and purposes.  (side note - spell check wanted 'all intensive purposes' (for fux ache))
