One cup per load and when it reaches the 3 on the cup is what my mom taught me when doing laundry.

I've got my detergent on a shelf over the washer so I just push the button for a few seconds until it feels like enough.

We all know what happens if you use too much.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Use half what it recommends if you have a top loader, thats for sure;  That & the reason you have fabric softener gunked in the agitator (if yours dispenses) is because you're using too much.  Don't use washer packs unless its a large load.

A good solution is a cup of citric acid, some baking soda and and empty, hot large cycle to get it cleaned out.... then quit using so much.

I got tired of buying ever-shrinking bottles of detergent for ever more money, so I sent away for 50 lbs of dry detergent.  Luckily I don't mind the smell of it, which seems to completely go away in the wash.  I scoop a bunch into the final bottle of liquid detergent I bought and fill with water, shake, and pour out a capful, in a highly scientific process.  At my age, I fear it's a lifetime supply.

I seem to remember that years ago Consumer Reports did a test where they compared vs. laundry detergents. The control was no detergent at all, and it did just as well.

Fill the cup to the 1 line. If there's a bunch if very dirty stuff then the 2 line. Seems to get our clothes clean every time so I keep doing it.

Sasquach: Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Really - if people have to read this pointlessly long article instead of reading one or two sentences on the bottle, they're doing it wrong.
