It was a smart move.  He was hedging on the fact the ball would be dropped in the bullpen, and since he was the only one who jumped, he would have had no problem retrieving it.  Risk/Reward.

Which would have mattered if the ball landed in the bullpen. Since it didn't, your comment is pretty much worthless.

Back during the Mcguire/Sosa run, my friend warned all those around him that any ball hit in this direction would be fair game.

From what I understand, the league has already offered him $2M for it.
