James Madison was a huge slave owner, once having almost 200 slaves at home.  He still had 38 or 39 when he died, and he didn't free any of them in his will.  IOW, a True Southern Gentleman, not unlike the ever effervescent Lindsey Graham, or Ron "Take your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, and go back where you came from" DeathSantis.

And now Lizzo is playing his crystal flute.

That's awesome

The amount of pure racism that got thrown at her over this simple artistic act with a piece of musical history?

I mean... I always knew and have experienced racist America, but this sh*t is on full boil right now thanks to some fat f*ck bringing all these f*ckers out of their hidey holes and using the anonymity of the internet to amplify their pure hatred.

Amplify her voice just like this and have her do a number at Carnegie Hall with it.

The way the right acted about it you would have thought they used the flute as a dildo in a porno. Before this I had never heard of the program of letting artist use historical instruments and I think it is a great idea that they get used. What do they want just have these things hang on a wall and gather dust and they are sacred and should never be played again? But good on the library of congress letting this pieces of history still get used.

If it were some white conservative darling, they would have sung praises and prayer circles would have formed.

That's the only difference.

Modern "conservatives" would have hated Madison.  His primary philosophy was that the Federal government needed more power and that state's rights would only weaken the nation.

Madison, like all of the founders, are merely sacred figureheads to conservatives.  They are not considered to have had differing opinions.  They are believed to have had a hive mind.  This myth is the basis of the Republican nominating philosophy for judges.  Only Thomas and Alito can peer directly into the minds of the founders and divine how they all agreed on voting rights or zoning restrictions, when in reality they disagreed consistently.

My first and only thought about the whole thing was: "Madison was a slave owner. Lizzie could have pulled an Allyson Hannigan with that flute for all I care."

It's almost immaterial who Madison was. The flute was a gift that he set aside and never did anything with. It had no intrinsic connection to him at all.

The only reason anyone could have reasonably gotten upset is if the flute itself had value due to never being used, like "The Messiah" (the world's most valuable violin due to being the lone Stradivarius that hasn't ever been played). Or if it was so incredibly fragile with age that playing it would have caused irreparable damage. But since neither of those applied, it was far cooler and more educational to let someone finally use it and let everyone hear what this ancient instrument sounds like. Besides, it was created to make music, not be locked away forever in a case. Let the thing serve its purpose.

The important distinction is that's just noise. Lizzo made music. Only the second is worthy of celebration.

I seem to recall a prophecy that states:

"When the crystaline fife sings its song,
dark sirens will herald the father,
renewing life once long thought gone,
a heart quickens and he will possess her."

Though, I'm dubious that the meaning is as flowery as your interpretation...

Her reaction is kind of wonderful. She's clearly excited at having been given that opportunity and recognizes what a cool moment she's enjoying. PLUS, it brought attention to a cool artifact that none one knew existed prior to this week.

Anyone mad at that is a sorry human being.

Other than how much she uses "biatch" (admittedly as a reclaimed word, it's entirely intentional) virtually nothing about her is actually controversial.  The twerking is pretty mainstream, and while she used to be kind of in your face with showing skin to push back about her figure, and had stage props/setup like big butts on a video screen, it was all clearly meant as good fun.  She's actually well educated, well spoken, and hard working and that's probably even MORE threatening to the RepubDerps.
