I do love how the Olympics always likes to promote this moment despite their own attempts to prevent it from happening, even after it was clear the person meant no harm to the competitor.

My father would absolutely do that for me, and I for him.  Of course neither of us would ever be competing at any elite level athletic competition.  It was so late in my life before I realized not everyone had the good fortune in parents I did.

My best to the Redmond family.

I can't help but shed a tear every time I see this video, as if it had been me, my Dad would have done the same thing, even though neither of us would qualify to be within a thousand miles of an Olympic event. And I miss my Dad so much, RIP 1/4/08.

Well done, both athlete and father. Well done.

His son is going to keep trying whether or not he has a chance to make the finish line. So the alternatives are essentially tranquilizing/subduing a young athlete that may never have another chance to cross that line in the Olympics or risk him hurting himself more as he attempts to do it alone. His dad is maybe the only person he'll accept help from in this moment and that father understands his priorities and steps up to get his son through a trying time without skipping a beat.

Little dusty here, yeah.

I remember seeing them cross the finish line, but I didn't remember the part where some asshole Olympic official tried to tell them "you can't do that!" and the dad told that guy to fark right off. Around the midpoint of the video. (And an apparently more compassionate guy came out later, evidently just asking if he was okay.)

This is how I know you're not an athlete.

It's the Olympics. He's representing his country on the world stage. There's nothing wrong with not winning or getting injured or coming in last. But, by God, his name will not have "DNF" next to it in the Olympic records. That is a race you finish or die trying.

I broke my foot dancing a block from my house and called my dad to pick me up. He WALKED. He made me walk a block on a broken foot instead of just getting the damn car. Then they didn't take me to the hospital til the next day because they thought I was a drama queen even though I literally heard a snap.

To go that far and rip a muscle running shows how much strain he put his body under. His brain literally pushed his body -- or at least a bit of it - to failure.

Anyway, a great Dad moment.

I broke my foot dancing a block from my house and called my dad to pick me up. He WALKED. He made me walk a block on a broken foot instead of just getting the damn car. Then they didn't take me to the hospital til the next day because they thought I was a drama queen even though I literally heard a snap.


During martial arts class i kicked a persons Elbow sparring, and fractured the middle bone of my foot.

No one believed me when I said i thought i broke my foot and i only went the clinic to PROVE i was wrong by my dad, and every minute during the drive and while waiting he complained at how expensive it was, and how I was expected to work it off by doing chores, until the X-ray showed I did, 2 days after i broke it.  That was a very painful 2 days.  no one apologized to me

didn't even get a cast, just got a Velcro "Shoe" that just had a flat wooden sole, practically a clog

It was even worse reasoning than that (minus the one guy trying to stop the dad when he first jumped onto the track). This was back in the era when stadium security was pretty lax and they didn't really worry about player safety (though being post-Munich, the athletes' village security was tightened by this point).

The officials were trying to get them off simply because they were throwing the schedule off. The only allocate X # of minutes per heat and have so many to get through each day, and the delay caused by this spontaneous moment of humanity was simply unacceptable for the choreographed spectacle that is the Olympics.

As both a son and a father, this moment gets me. You know the dad knows how hard his son has worked to get to this moment and in the middle, his body fails. And it's the Olympics - there's no "next season" - it's four years away. As a runner, that's forever. Such a tough, touching moment. Still hits me.

Um, gonna call you out on that. Even if he was unassisted and walked/crawled to the finish, they will let him. It was a 400 meter race, one lap, so it would be a few minutes for him to finish. Next time you watch the Olympics, see how far back some runners are in the 10,000 meters, They let them finish even though they may be a few laps behind.

Four years earlier, Redmond had an Achilles injury that prevented him from competing in Seoul. All the years training for this moment (yes, there are World's and European and other events, but the Olympics are the apex) and to suffer an injury, or get tripped, or to have someone bump into you, or to get "the twisties", etc. I don't close a deal, I get to try again tomorrow. To have to wait 4 years and train like they do...it takes a special person to do that.

When my dad heard that a friend and I were getting beaten up by a gang one night, he charged to the rescue on a ride-on lawnmower.  He took the opportunity to do some mowing on the way.  I heard the prick ten minutes before he got there, when my head wasn't being held underwater in the sea.  Thanks dad.
