I always surmised that deja vu was the result of experiencing real time events via areas of the brain normally associated with past memories. It is as if my current experience is 'recognized' as something remembered.

The "hints" in medical literature of a connection between deja vu and seizure activity is far more than just a hint. It is one of the most common auras there are. The aura being the start of a seizure that builds to stronger seizure activity. Most people with epilepsy who have absence seizures often learn that the years of deja vu were the early signs they were having seizures.
