(Vice)   You could say the FBI was a chain of fools for keeping Aretha Franklin under surveillance. Fortunately, Aretha was a do-good woman   (vice.com) divider line

Hoover wasted a lot of time and money keeping tabs on public figures that he thought were going to sway the masses by using their fame.  Everyone from Harry Belafonte to Bogart and Bacall to Paul Newman to John Lennon.  IIRC, he had a good-sized file on Helen Keller.  He didn't realize that once they get too flaky, the public turns on them anyway.  He sure as sh*t could have done better by following other public figures and politicians instead of high-profile celebrities.

Here are some of the wildest things found in Franklin's FBI file:
FBI thought a performance at MLK's funeral could spark a revolution

Anything at MLK's funeral could have sparked a revolution. Not that wild, Vice.

In the same way Facebook was for Zuck to try and get dates, the whole point of the FBI was for Hoover to find out who else was gay

When all the Hoover stuff came to light, they should have locked the doors of the FBI headquarters and burned the place down.

They were race subversives and anyone not entirely in love with big business. Hoover was a monster. The FBI hounded someone like the actress Jean Seberg to suicide because she donated money to the NAACP. After the miscarried her baby, likely due to stress, they spread rumors that the baby was mixed/the father was black. She had to post pictures to show these were lies.

Hoover had one of the biggest collections of amateur pornography ever put together, which his goons pulled from people they shook down and he kept as kompromat (and personal pecadillos).

Recently, of course, the FBI neglected to do any searches on someone like Brett Kavanaugh despite claiming they did, after hundreds of complaints about impropriety.

The FBI is farking foul.

She was a relatively wealthy black woman. She had to be doing something criminal.

I feel like throwing up. While every violent horror imaginable has been visited upon black people in this country almost since it's inception, the FBI was concerned that Aretha Franklin might trigger racial violence. And the reason she was a person of interest, investigated like a murderous drug lord: she advocated for Civil Rights and Equality for black people. There is only one word adequate for a person who opposes civil rights or equality for any race: EVIL.
