He uses body doubles. This is known.

I could see them being used when he is no longer physically stable enough for public appearances.

We could actually trade him for some American republican Congress critters, and not significantly change either countries politics.

Highly doubtful -- to date they have simply not demonstrated anything even close to the level of skill required for a convincing hologram.

Putin's strong man image has taken quite a beating over the past year. He's being seen as weak and desperate.
That's not a good thing for a dictator. Because dictators don't get second chances. When they screw up, they die. Once they show weakness their enemies gather and strike.
Putin will need to put on a show, something to scare the folks back home into quieting down.

Vladimir Judas Rimmer works as well.

I always thought Rimmer was one of those clever Bri'ish nicknames, not his actual name.  I guess it could be both?

Very unlikely.
Putin's options are limited. But he has to make to November at the least, because if the GOP take Congress they'll sabotage NATO for him. Then Putin will have a shot at winning his illegal war.

That seems to be the fear right now.

And it begs the question...  What happens if he does that?  Is that the moment that the world unites and basically wipes Russia off the map as a sovereign nation?

Or will the world just sit there saying, "Well, that's a shame."?

Putin has pretty much already used the US's use of nukes on Japan as justification for why he can do it today.  Even though it is not at all the same thing.  He seems to think it is.  And whether not it's justified won't mean much to the few million people that are incinerated.

It's beginning to look more and more like the best solution to this problem is for Putin to commit suicide with 3 bullets to the head and falling down and elevator shaft.

There would be targeted regime change forced on the nation, along with forced demilitarization and denuclearization.  No, I don't think we "wipe them off the map".

Putin is one of the few people where the "secret fake lookalikes" rumours are probably true.

But it almost certainly isn't holograms, its similar-looking people who "chose" to have surgery.

Close? Yes, "they" have come close. But it takes a LOT of people and a LOT of time to even get to that point,
and deepfake/machine learning, as good as it is for stills and shots where people don't move their heads much, isn't there yet, either. I'm not certain that it ever will be.

However, to fool most people it doesn't need to be perfect.

And this politician sounds like a fool, so, maybe it would work.

Besides, there would be some idiot kid on the DigiVlad project who would post his work on social media.

I think I didn't clarify the way I meant.  When I added on "as a sovereign nation", I was meaning to imply that they would still be there, on the map, but they wouldn't be under their own control anymore.

Which is more or less what you more specifically said.

Gen Patreus has been saying that in the event Russia uses nukes in Ukraine, the US would attack Ruskie forces in Ukraine with a full scale conventional attack.

He is retired but may actually have been cleared to unofficially send that msg on escalation.

As far as a deterrent policy goes, making Russia think that using nukes in Ukraine will not result in meeting its objectives, proposing a series of NATO retaliations to destroy its army in Ukraine seems logical.

Of course if this threat moves from bluff to action, the question becomes if Russia accepts that NATO is only attacking its forces in Ukraine and it is best to not continue raising the stakes, or are we gonna take brinksmanship to all out war (across other fronts) that can culminate with full release of nukes.

Shockingly, it only lost points for "does not use misleading/sensational headlines". But yeah, it's classified as a tabloid.

RasIanI: I'm pretty sure that if Putin was dead, peace talks would be underway.

Zelenskyy ruled that out a couple links down.  And since there's no reason for them to change their demands from "want peace?  GTFO of Ukraine".  Anyone who tries to start negotiating and gets nothing isn't going to do well in post-Putin Russia.  They'd be better off unilaterally pulling out, and even the guy who orders that will pay a price.

I have to wonder who would be hurt by the entire orc army going AWOL from Ukraine?  Putin, obviously.  But would the rest of army command just be able to pin all the blame on Putin and walk away from it?  Especially if Putin is dead?  Sure, the entire army running away is going to seriously p!ss off Russian nationalists (how much longer will they here "Russia is weak"), but which general wants to be the one the inevitable "stabbed in the back" legend forms around?  No matter how much a general might love his fellow orc nationalists, he doesn't want that.

Post posting edit: Any bets that the real reason to delay the announcement (and backdate his death) is to order a withdrawl from Ukraine and blame Putin for it?  For anyone near the reins of power, this is the next best thing to forcing your enemy to give the orders to withdrawl (hard to engineer).

If the Russians are leaving as orderly as Russian logisitics allow, I'd guess Putin is dead.  But wouldn't be at all surprised if Russians are running away (and Putin will either eat a revolver or take flying lessons).
