It was pretty bad.

I watched on a flagship-level LG OLED tv in a darkened room and the scenes were so dark it was more like doing homework than enjoying a film. "Which person in a cloak is THIS one?!?!"

IIRC they did this with half of a GoT episode, too. Just stupid.

That was still back when people pretended that it was good. The 99% of people who didn't have a perfectly calibrated tv and a perfectly lit room in which to watch tv shows were at fault for that one.

I'm like three episodes behind on this show, but at least now I can find all FARK headlines with "yellowy brown smear" with a single button click.

It had potential starting out, but the show's creators apparently slept through the classes on character development during film school.

It is, and it's pretty good. Basically, if GoT was "Sopranos meets Lord of the Rings," this one is like "Succession meets Lord of the Rings."

But, yeah, that episode was daaaark.

I gave it two episode and gave up. Hey, I did the same thing with GoT, then I circled back years later and loved it. I'll try the same thing with this one. Enjoy it!

Honestly, it felt like they were trying to avoid nudity for the sex scene, but just made it even more awkward by having to squint at the darkness.

2022-10-04 11:01:55 AM
I'll finish the episode at some point this week, but the first 20 minutes of the episode was a funeral and I realized I had a good book to read.

I have no idea who anyone is. The black guy is the bad guy. Maybe? I don't know his name. The brother just scowls a lot. There are a bunch of kids. I dont know their names. And I don't care.

I really wanted to like this show, but I'm struggling.

Everyone is the bad guy. There's no one to root for. Maybe the king, because he's weak and can't see or act on what's happening around him, but that's more pity than sympathy.

It's pretty meh... we watch it mostly because we've got nothing better to do on Sunday evening, but definitely hasn't drawn me in like GoT's first season did. Feel like the laziness of reusing the GoT theme song kinda permeates the whole show

Succession has better writing and acting, and doesn't just skip ahead months or years at a time every episode.

But I will say it took a few seasons for me to really get into Succession and I hope HoD eventually builds into something similar but I am doubtful.

Honestly the only thing I want is for this show to be just good enough that they greenlight some more GoT world series.  There is so much to explore and enjoy and I really can't wait for some just good fantasy stories that really tap into everything this world has to offer.

Stop trying to fit characters into overly simple archetypes like "bad guy" and "good guy". Characters have nuance and motivations that you will not notice if you can't see beyond black and white.

Ultimately they all recognize that a weak king is in his final days, and they are vying for power, and it's going to heat up into a massive civil war leading to the temporary extinction of dragons. What's not to like?

But Larys Strong is definitely a bad guy.

So, no one noticed all of the day for night BS during the outdoor scenes? It makes the overall darkness of the episode even more damning. Biggest giveaway? None of the torches put out any light or shadow.

They're all just out for themselves, with some of them being more ruthless than others.  I'd call Daemon a bad guy too just for the whole first wife thing.

But like NOLA said, there's not much that's compelling or interesting about 90% of the characters.

Daemon's second wife committed suicide by dragon fire because she and the baby were both likely going to die.  Did anybody care about it?  I mean, it was sad in a general sense, but we didn't really know bugger all about her.  She was just a woman in a bad situation that chose to end it.  Contrast that with Varys's death in GoT.  Ignoring the stupidity that led up to him getting caught, I had some feeling for that because I'd been invested in the character for so long.

Also like NOLA said above, I struggle to remember peoples' names and don't much care to.  Larys Strong is the dude with the cane I assume?  For me most of them are stuff like "The King" "His Daughter" "The Queen" "The Older Blonde Kid" "The Younger Blonde Kid" "The Brown Haired Kids".  We barely know anything about them other than most of them are dicks to each other.

It's got color (except most of ep 7) and motion and stuff happens on screen, but it's certainly not compelling.

Gotta admit though, the nighttime reveal of the dragon being dark kind of added to the "wow, that is a BIG effing lizard" of the moment.

That was before the enormity of the turd before them was laid bare and they had to go on the offensive with "well of course Dany was always going to go coocoo for Cocoa Puffs when she won" which while true elided how the last season was wasted on 2 episodes of driving to the fireworks factory followed up by quickly smiting everyone and then Poochie went to become king of his home planet.

He's still alive? I'm a couple episodes I. Am I thought they had him pretty well marked for death and then I heard there were time skips so I thought he died sometime after his brother won the battle against the Crab King

Wile_E_Canuck:

I've never forgiven them for how they summarily dumped out Varys in the final season. Like a first pass of a term paper due the next morning, they just wrote him out being stupid because he needed to be dead and that was that. It's everything that was wrong with the later seasons, where even deaths you didn't like had interesting consequences down the line.

Going to wait until the season ends to renew my HBO and watch HotD (assuming they stick the landing).

But that said I'd be all over an Adventures of Dunk and Egg series.

It is a slow, slow burn, but it is picking up steam. Same problems Andor has, but less extreme. They are running out of time breeches GoT with all the time jumps and that King lived longer than I expected. He actually longer going to die young.

It's a conscious choice by the director and/or editor.  A lot of 'serious' hollywood show have a grimdark filter they put on every damn scene.  It leaches out color and contrast.  And it looks terrible even on a good setup.

It is the modern equivalent of the old 60s 'day for night filter' and its just as bad.  If you look closely in some places you can see shadows in 'dark' scenes.

Editors need to accept that it sucks and stop using it.  Its overuse ruined the last few seasons of Thrones and other shows and is currently ruining HOTD.  For all its faults, the LOTR show has loads of color and is a million times nicer to watch becasue of it.

Yes, and he has apparently left the series.  It's too bad he has become so engrossed by that ugly technique.  He also directed Hardhome, which is one of the better GOT episodes.

Anyways, he's far from the only director that uses that awful filter.  Hopefully the new HOTD showrunner discovers color.

2022-10-04 6:08:26 PM
I don't understand how everyone is saying this. I could see everything clearly on my screen, so much so that it more or less looked like the night scene was actually recorded during the day and htey just adjusted the brightness and color to cover up to make it look like it was at night. Which is a super annoying filming technique that never, ever, looks good.

Also, I think the guy who directed this episode is the same that directed the notorious S8 episode.

Also, also, a moose bit my sister. It was quite nasti.

As did the films. My go-to examples are the Blackwater Bay battle from GoT and the Helm's Deep battle in The Two Towers. Both took place at night, under fairly dark conditions (a thunderstorm at Helm's Deep).

Did any viewer feel yanked out of Helm's Deep because you could actually see the characters' faces? Did it impact the suspension of disbelief in any way?

I sure didn't. If the majority answer "no" to that question, there's no reason to use that crappy grimdark style.

Between poorly lit scenes in some series and horrible forced background music in others (I'm looking at you, Resident Alien), I'm starting to feel like producers don't actually *want* us to watch their shows.

It looked fine. And I only hate watch this horrible trash show. Remember when HBO did good shows? Poor contrast was the least of the complaints. Seriously, what do they have now? Garbage people doing garbage things and some greasy daily show reject to counter some aging boomer and a bunch of woke by numbers crap?

Oh no, he went there!
