Yeah, I used to load up Vice City, turn on the cheats, and just see how long I could go on killing before I got bored.  Or how many tanks I could steal from the military, or if I could escape in a chopper.  Maybe I'm mixing up my GTAs there, but I think there was one in Vice City you could fly.

But mostly when I get bored of the story I choose a type of pedestrian to kill and see how many I can get before I'm killed.  Or I'll be driving along and just start killing motorcyclists.

That's the primary appeal of the game anyway, right?  Terminator roleplaying.

To some. I always played GTA fairly straight, I didn't really care about the mass murder after doing it once or twice, it's not all that exciting. The missions make things better, especially in GTA V.

Pacifist challenges are cool, there are some really amazing pacifist runs out there. Ninja Gaiden on NES for example, https://www.kotaku.com.au/2021/07/ninja-gaiden-pacifist-speedrun-is-impressive-af/

You still have to fight the bosses obviously, but people have beat it without killing a single other enemy.

This is the thing that bugs me about GTA... the single player route is on some pretty solid rails.  You can kill MORE people, but only very rarely can you do things killing fewer than suggested or none at all.  Hell, a lot of the missions are outright assassinations.

I'd try a pacifist run if such a thing were possible, but it just ain't.

Yeah, Vice City in particular was one where a group of friends and I would take turns putting in the weapons cheat and try to wreak as much havoc as possible before getting killed or arrested.  I never used cheats in the actual game mode, but that was a fun way to make it "multiplayer" back in the day.

I did that with 3, no cheats but we went online to find fast ways to get tanks or fast cars...

At one point, I could get through quite a few Contra levels without firing a shot until the bosses. Not the base levels, obviously, but the jungle, waterfall and snow levels were doable. With 30 lives, obviously.

Me and my buddies would do something similar but we try to see who could steal tank with only using the chainsaw as your weapon.

Always had to fun when you're got the tank in your sights and you're trying to get that door off but 30 cops are trying to kill you.

I mean, the name kind of gives away that somebody's gonna die, but ghosting missions with no collateral damage and no one alerted to your presence was the most fun (and usually most difficult) way to play that great game.

Getting the achievement for killing exactly 47 people in the hotel was fun, too.
