To be fair, Notch was relying on modders to "fix" issues and implement ideas. Oh and he was "borrowing" heavily from other building survival games that were being crowdsourced tested.

Sure. Notch gets credit for the specific aesthetics and a few integral things that make it 'Minecraft', like the creepers and other mob designs. But the idea of digging blocks or building shelter or any number of other things is not new. Notch even admitted that the basic premise was ripped off of Infiniminer, which didn't have anywhere near the feature set, but established the general tone of the game.

I haven't played 'Vanilla' minecraft other than to test a server setup for over a decade. I see Minecraft, at least the Java edition, to be a sort of 'game engine' that the modders whose work I am actually interested in can build on.

Minecraft was like a passion project being built by a guy with no passion for the project whatsoever.

I followed the devblogs pretty closely back then, and I got the feeling that Notch just didn't have the qualifications, capacity, or desire to be in charge of a company. He just wanted to dick around with fun programming concepts and make games, and he resented that he had to actually work hard maintaining a game he was bored with.

And then he got 2 billion dollars AND didn't have to work on Minecraft anymore, and he started getting some affluenza. Do note that his longtime girlfriend and then wife left him AFTER he got the money. It probably takes quite a lot of douchebaggery to make someone come down on that side of the scale.
