I've lost a friend that has to deal with Atlanta traffic.  She's become addicted to talk radio, after needing traffic updates.

She's a first generation South American immigrant, and to hear her bleating out the BS is obscene.  She's in healthcare, knows everything she hears about COVID coming from these fools is lies, but turns around and believes everything else they say.

Her husband even gave her satellite radio, so she'd have tons of Hispanic choices, but nope, she still goes right back when he's not around.

#BlockFoxNews

I did this for my parents and they called me to ask for help. I told them I couldn't figure it out

What is up with these horrible greenlights the past couple of days?  Yes, Fox News is bad, but the problem is WAY more complex than this.  It's the equivalent of an '80's airline food joke.  Everyone did it.  Much like your mom.

(For those of you unaware, we used to be served food on flights that were longer than 4 hours, and they weren't very good.)

I did this for my workplace, I felt it was in the best interest of for the mental health our clients (and Staff really). I don't think cable news/talk shows are good for mental health in general, but Fox is the only one I blocked. I know they used to watch it all the time because I would change it, then when I came back the next day and Fox would almost always be there when I turned the TV on (put on by somebody on another shift).

The best part is, nobody wants to admit to being either a Fox fan or technically illiterate so they never mentioned a word of it to anyone as far as I know; that was two years ago. Recently we moved, the box reset, and Fox was back for a little while before I got around to blocking it again...still not a word from anyone.

/I would have changed it back if anyone had really made a stink, but they didn't /shrug

Fortunately, I have no close living relatives that need such an intervention.  Fox News messed up my great uncle, but he's not among the living anymore.

You know, I think there's a bit of nurture vs nature in that, when I had to commute I got addicted to talk radio myself....

But I turned on PBS.

So I never ended up going down any of the potential rabbit holes.

I will think about that but I am pretty happy without them in my life. I thought I would be sad by cutting my parents out of my life but honestly my depression issues have been improved now that I told them to fark off with their Fox News watching ways. I hope they die alone while Tucker Carlson keeps whispering sweet racism into their ears

I had a lifelong friend who was going through a bad divorce, the financial stress of splitting that household up, finding out as they were splitting that his wife was pregnant. He didn't cope well. He drank too much, worked like a madman, and that was driving all over rural MO in places without decent radio just as conservative talk radio was booming and Rush was ascending for that job. He absorbed more than 8 hours of that shiat each work day. It changed him, fed an anger already kindled by the stress of his circumstances and ruined dreams. He moved with me then since he was broke paying child support and still kicking in to his ex-wife because she was the mother of his kid and a financial mess. I was in college. To the extent that I could, I regulated his life. Washed his work clothes. Woke his drunk ass up for work before I went to my own or to classes. His dad jibed to the changes that poison was bringing out in his kid. His dad was a union leader back when all those guys at least leaned Democrat. He bought him the book Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot. He talked to him when he could carve out time. I did too. My friend came around. He recognized the vulnerability that had made him available for that shiat. It took awhile. Good luck with your friend.

Same here. Did this when visiting my parents about a decade ago.

Father called me up a few hours later screaming at me to undo it. I refused.
He called DirecTV and they unblocked it for him... so this is only a temporary solution at best.

Google Maps and traffic crowd sourcing was the way away from Atlanta AM talk radio for me. Afternoon drive was Hannity at the time (hork). I check Google Maps before I leave for work and coming home - or when traveling to check traffic between the hotel and the facility I am working from.
I use Waze even when I know where I am going and let it keep an eye on traffic for me. Radio traffic reports can be stupidly wrong (they seem to frequently say the wrong direction).

1. Stopping the propaganda flowing to the indoctrinated victims is always a good start.

2. I remember being served food on flights, the last time I experienced it was in 1979 on a United flight, and the food was actually good. Even my parents remarked how pleasantly surprised they were by it.

Not for nothin', but when MY grandma died we cleaned out her garage and basement of dozens and dozens of unopened Home Shopping Network boxes.

When we piled it all up and started opening them, it was a blizzard of junky costume jewelry, ginger jars, knickknacks, and novelty cooking tools like melon ballers and fancy slicers for vegetables, about $8,000 of her limited income converted to crap that all went to Goodwill.

What I'm saying is, they might have done you a favor.

No can do, subby.  Mom only watches local news - the fear mongering is more personal.  For national and international news she uses facebook and all her well-infromed friends provide the fear mongering.

My dad didn't give two shiats about politics. The last time I heard any opinion out of him was during the Bush Jr years and he remarked that he missed Bill Clinton's economy. Then Obama became president and his racist ass started becoming more vocal. Now that he's retired, he watches Charlie Kirk and Ben Shapiro online all day. Oh, and unfunny right wing "comedians".

I'm pretty sure ever local NPR station has traffic updates every half hour. Maybe just dial to that and break the knob off?

But seriously, maybe just encourage her to listen to some of that? Like, next time you're in her car ask her to check it out? It could at least be a bit of balance.

Pluto TV is great for that too. I can get my random Rifftrax movies, and my dad gets his 60s Westerns or Cheers and all is well. I mean, both parents were watching CNN coverage of Ukraine today during lunch today. They have no interest in Fox.

When my mother-in-law lived with us, I had blocked FoxNews and all the home-shopping type networks on the Tivo.  A few weeks into her stay she complained she couldn't watch the news.

I told her that there was some contract disputes between Spectrum and Fox and Spectrum removed Fox from it's programing lineup until the contract dispute gets sorted.  Since it had just happened with a different network a few months before, she took it at face value and never questioned it again.

2022-10-03 8:46:21 AM
I considered doing this after my father in law started angrily ranting before the Superbowl last year that they replaced the national anthem with some "woke crap" from the pregame show. The national anthem played a few minutes later and my wife made a point to mention how stupid he sounded when it did. My mother in law doesn't let him watch Fox when she's around but that's the only place he would have gotten the term woke from. Hopefully it doesn't come down to parental blocking him out of those channels, but we'll see.

I work with tons of people constantly plugged into a drip of conservative media and I just don't get it.
