So what are the chances of Bolsonaro peacefully leaving office?

Hopefully Bolsonaro kills himself. Trump admirers don't deserve to have a country.

From what I see online, this is heading to a runoff election on October 30.

Yeah nobody  got more than 50 percent so there is a runoff.  You should learn to read Spanish subby.

Apparently attaching a link from a Mexican newspaper didn't work on mobile.

Although I forgot everyone had little pictures on mobile so those were amusing today.

vowed Lula, who was barred from the 2018 election that saw Bolsonaro elected, on corruption charges that were later over-turned

Wait until right before the runoff, when everyone hears about his emails.

Eh, it's a fair statement. Either no-one won the first round, or the candidates advancing to the runoff are both winners of the first round. What did not happen is Bolsonaro winning while Lula did not.

This is not cool. Lula was expected to win in a landslide, he should have won outright. It's very worrying that it was this close and there's 28 more days for shiat to go wrong.

Simone Tebet was probably the sanest choice, but Brazilian society is too polarized to elect a centrist.

I think, based on my very limited knowledge of Brazilian politics, that she would have been excellent, but the issue is less that she's a centrist and more that she's an unknown and didn't do a great job getting her name out there. It's not that people are hard-line right or left, it's that they know Lula and Bolsonaro so well.

He's gonna magically end up not alive and it's going to be chalked up to "not an assassination."

Which polling? I haven't seen him at below 50% in an aggregator in at least a month, although I'm not sure any of those accounted well for other candidates aside from him and Bolsonaro.

Their electoral commission reported that they replace over thousands of voting machines.  Bolsanaro is an outright christofascist who would have no qualms with a coup.  He has a photo of the last military dictator in his office that he probably rubs one off to every day and the military and Jair currently give each other the reach around. And he and his farkstick sons (who are just as inept as Half Scoop and I'm Eric) are as crooked as a dog's hind legs.  They like to hang with that fat alky fascist Steve Bannon and would burn the entire Amazon if they could get away with it.

..and? Am I supposed to take from this that Bolsonaro rigged the results to make them closer? If so, just farking say it, don't insinuate it. I already know Bolsonaro is shiat.

I'm gonna need more than insinuations of fraud to believe them though. I have infinite faith in the folly of man.

It would not surprise me in the least if he did this to make the results closer.  All polling before the election had Lula with a wider margin.  Bolsanaro has always been saying don't trust polls, and is now saying see I told you so.  I imagine he wanted to make things much close now so in the second turn he has more justification to do dispute the results.

Nice farking election rules.  You need to have 51% in order to prevent a runnoff, even if you win by some 8 percentage points.

So what happens when the runoff is still not 51%?  They do it again?

Both are equally bad in different ways.

What a pity the country has obligatory voting. This makes it a popularity contest between the ultra nazi racists Christofascists who live their hateful crazy god substitute, and a huge population that can barely read and does not understand that their favourite robber baron only gives them small crumbs while stealing billions and bringing a country to its knees in the process.

Then there are a few stupid idealists who believe Lula is a real communist bs a thief or who believe Bozo really is somehow less corrupt than Lula.

There were very viable proper politicians running as well, but it's like big brother or survivor here. Reality tv show that has nothing to do with reality.

Poor Brazil.

Pastor Laura Almeida, at the Mustard Seed Ministry in the north-eastern city of Recife, is one of his most committed fans. Standing in front of her Sunday congregation, she sings his praises.
"We'll vote for Bolsonaro because he is God," she tells her members. "He defends the same principles as us in accordance with the word of God."

Thanks to Trump and Brazil, I have come to believe the Bible is real, insomuch as the Anti-Christ(s) is real and has no problem luring Christians. Does Ballsaco have a golden idol of him made by his followers too?

The world must be purged not only of evil, but of people too stupid to recognize it.

I was watching some news stories recently about Brazil and Bolsonaro being chummy with the country's military.  So I expect that if Lula wins in the next round of voting, Bolnosaro will just call up the military, have Lula either imprisoned or executed, and return Brazil to a military dictatorship.  Seeing as he's a lot like TFG, I doubt I'm wrong.

Not very likely. Lula has literally a tens of millions of ardent supporters who have nothing to lose in burning the country to the ground if needed. These supporters make anywhere between 50-250 US dollars a month and live in favelas or extremely poorly hand to mouth. Lula has their loyalty by giving them a little food every month and a few tens of dollars in support. He says what they want to hear and they love him and allow him to rob the country blind.

There are not enough bullets, soldiers and police to stop them all and unlike many other places, these people are willing to die for him and burn everything down while doing it.

Unlike say the USA, there was never a civil rights movement in Brazil. These people are burning with indignation (rightfully so) and longing for justice. It's a powder keg waiting for a spark.

This is not the Brazil of 1964 anymore. The heaving masses are not silent and passive like they once were.

2022-10-03 8:17:57 AM
And Bozo and his supporters are cowards and bullies with guns and big words who will not stand and fight for their principles as they have none.

It remains to be seen if the military would risk losing what little respect and redemption they have accumulated since 1984 for a crazy lunatic who does not have the support of the masses.
