I guess there are a lot of people in the UK as well as the US who would accept a fascist dictator if it meant the possibility of sending immigrants to a death camp.   We dared to elect a black president and 1/3 of America wants to burn it all down now.

The social sciences have been wrongly belittled to the point where arguing out of ignorance is seen as equally sound.

That's a large part of why people were attracted towards those like Trump: this thought that the people who lucked their way into wealth were supposedly more informed about economics than actual economists.

No, he's right. The bolded part is kind of a self-own, because that's how "legitimate" economics theory operates; if you lucked into wealth, it's because you're better at economics.

It's not a science.

"Actual economists" claim that the current level of inflation is the result of poor people being paid too much, and that if they just convince corporations to fire and/or lower wages again that prices will go down.

Economics is no more a science than astrology is, and it's built on the exact same bullshiat post hoc justication process to validate itself that all other hoodoo nonsense uses.

The solution to the problem he's outlining is solved by raising the minimum wage.

The fraud is that the system depends on the very same workers this guy is telling need to get out of their job.  If they all actually succeeded on getting a higher paying job the system would collapse because no one would be doing their work.

If your system requires some people to "fail" and those who "fail" are the most critical workers in maintaining that system, despite being the worst paid, your system needs improvement

Look at who Boris replaced, then look at who Theresa May replaced. It's a pattern; like American Republicans, Tories start bad but only get worse. Maybe if they get booted out of power for a good few years then MAYBE they'd try to actually push semi-competent people instead of nakedly greedy, poor-hating imbeciles, but even then that seems unlikely.

The frustrating thing about economics is that it (usually) does not make moral statements. There are economists who add a (liberal or conservative) moral dimension to their commentary, but the economic social science tries very hard to not make moral judgments. If X and Y happen, then Z is likely to happen. X or Y or Z may be obviously (bad | good) for (liberals | conservatives), but sussing that out is not the goal of economics. But we all want them to say things that agree with our views.

The other frustrating thing is that, generally, experiments in economics are natural. It's running all around us, all the time. We have historical precedents to inform our analysis, but they are not a perfect match. Last time X and sorta-Y happened, it was mostly Z.

The third...among the frustrating things about economics are such diverse items as: it doesn't make moral statements, it can't run controlled experiments, and the Dunning-Kruger effect is very steep because people are in the experiment at all times and they...like...pay for stuff and rent is too damn high and I can balance a checkbook and DUH stupid non-science nerds.

/family member is a tenured econ professor
//definitely has moral opinions about political/judicial effects on the economy
///always use three slashies or there will be a shortage, leading to higher slashie prices
////end-stage capitalism excess consumption slashie FTW

"Get a better paid job" - brought to you from the same government that refuses to give staff across the public sector pay rises that come anywhere close to inflation, and who vilify anyone taking industrial action to secure a better wage.

I sometimes wonder if I'm caught in some kind of game show or "Trading places" style wager, where somebody is trying to see just how far the British public can be pushed before they take to the streets.
