Three Crooked Squirrels: Vote by mail if you can.

And as soon as you can. Once you vote, you drop off the mailing lists so candidates can focus on people who haven't voted yet.

2022-10-02 2:25:55 PM
I'm already voting by mail but I don't like people in my space to begin with. I'd probably not react very civil to someone getting in my way while I was voting.

2022-10-02 2:28:58 PM
I'm voting by mail my ballot should be here in a week or two. I don't mind voting in person but the line is always so long and I live in a blue area so I'm not worried about maga cultists.
I have voted early a few times here and the place is close and it is funny I was always the youngest person there.

My state is entirely vote-by-mail. It works beautifully. And among the many benefits of having no polling places is that it means there are no poll watchers.

Some places have and it does not help. The Red Hats started accusing people of being lizard people and throwing away votes.

/ Honestly? We probably need election observers from the UN...but that would probably trigger the Red Hats as well.

In Canada poll watchers are allowed. Each party is allowed to send one or two of them, they register with the front desk, and then they usually sit quietly in a chair all day. They are not permitted to call out, interfere with, or disrupt the voting process in any way whatsoever. They aren't even allowed to wear party colors (no one is).

Most of them are just there to make sure everyone votes and that no one is turned away unjustly (they often take notes of people who've been turned away, usually because they showed up at the wrong polling location or they have no/insufficient ID). But they cannot question, object, vouch or make a case for a voter's eligibility or the counting of the ballots. That's not what they're there for. They have no authoritative power.

If they so much as give the stink eye to a voter, they are asked to leave. If a poll watcher ever got between a voter and the ballot box, I'd grab them by the scruff of the neck and toss them out the door, club bouncer style.

I voted early for the primary / attempt to kill women because JEEEEsus vote back in August. There wasn't anyone there AND you could go to any polling place in the county. I picked a little town about 20 minutes from my house.

According to some GOP nitwits in positions of power, voting isn't a right because it's not enumerated and the 9th Amendment doesn't exist.  It skips right over the one about not being able to search Mar-a-Lago even with a warrant to the one about how States really have all the power except for liberal states.

He has declined to allow reporters to attend the training sessions, which he said have trained 7,000 potential poll watchers so far this year.

We are the party of transparency!

Well, yeah, it is like looking through an open window at your cheating. Especially if you hold the session in a basement in a locked cabinet guarded by a leopard.

Already turned in my absentee ballot. If I rolled up to my polling place and saw one of my American Taliban drone neighbors harassing people I don't trust myself to not just stomp the dog shit out of them at this point.

If I encountered a poll watcher I'd have no choice but to mess with them. I'd loudly talk to the person behind me in line saying "Sure has picked up. It wasn't this busy when I voted earlier today."

2022-10-02 3:01:03 PM
My county voted Trump 3-1 to 5-2 in '16 depending on the precinct. I hear a lot of garbage and propaganda repeated from Fox and the like, but no one I know claims any local election shenanigans. Still, every week the county election board has to have meetings and make public statements telling people the next election will be safe and secure.  I wish they could instead devote those hours to, I don't know, making voting easier and bringing out more voters.

(Where I once saw articles on early or absentee voting procedures, I now see articles on "security.")

Yeah because cameras in polling places won't freak some people out. Just let the poll workers have a LEO  on duty on speed dial. If a poll watcher gets out of hand eject them and they can argue to a judge why they should be let back in.

One strike policy for this B.S.

BTW I've been a poll watcher before and over ~7 elections I've challenged a voter exactly once. In that case the poll worker knew the person and said openly the person had moved out of the district.

There are sometimes poll watchers around here. It's the two old people at an out of the way table talking or looking bored, the party sends them and I have never really seen them do anything or interact with anyone, which as it turns out is exactly their role.

I love how all Canadians start with demure civility, and end up choosing violence.  100% of Canadians are willing to assault or rape someone at all times, but playact as if they have restraint.

They HATED poll watchers back during the Proposition 187 days.  I know because I was in peak Republican mode, but I was a long haired brown guy working the elections in a conservative Orange County district.  Mean geriatric Republicans kept accusing me of being a poll watcher even though I was politically aligned with them at the time.

This year, I'm looking forward to taunting THEM for being REAL poll watchers.

I always have fun with the party workers outside.

Them: Here's a sample ballot!
Me: Thanks, but they have real ones inside.

They always baffles them, but if they press they press the issue, I'm ready with "so I should take the voting advice from a complete stranger?" or "do you think I'm so stupid I can't figure who to vote for", depending on their attitude.  Probably won't happen though, usually about 60% blue vote here.  Just friendly chit-chat with helpful poll workers.
