(JSOnline)   30 years later, there's still no memorial for Dahmer's victims. Officials say they can hardly build memorials for every person murdered in Milwaukee. Surprisingly, some people don't like that answer   (jsonline.com) divider line

This may sound harsh, but I don't think there needs to be a unified memorial for his victims. Let each of their families grieve on their own way.

It's s no-win situation: If they don't set up a memorial, they'll be accused of racism; if they do, they'll be accused of glorifying Dahmer's crimes and they'll be hounded to set up memorials for anyone murdered in Milwaukee.

How about a memorial food cart?

They don't want the memorial because it reminds people what pieces of crap the police are. That's it. I bet there's memorials for cops that have been killed in millwakee.

They should go all in and build Dahmerland, a cannibalistic horror theme park. But they do have Kenosha right down the street. Never mind.

replace memorial with tourist attraction and ask if you still want it.

If you lived in Gacy's neighborhood would you want one?

2022-10-02 8:18:17 AM
Any such memorial would most likely end up visited far more frequently by serial killer fan weirdos than anyone wishing to honor the victims.

2022-10-02 8:20:25 AM
Maybe something classy and universal, like a pair of Golden Arches representing the victims and their families.

2022-10-02 8:21:57 AM
There's no joint memorial for any victims of serial killers. Gary Ridgeway killed way more people and even they don't have a memorial.

Bingo. Prolific killers and judicial cock-ups go hand in hand unfortunately

I think memorials are a great idea. Give people a chance to come together and acknowledge what happened, beyond those directly impacted. Spree killers terrorize the communities they target

I can do it for you - cheap!
I just need a few tubes of glue and about three dozen department store mannequins.
I promise it'll be tasteful.

Are there any memorials to the victims of serial killers? Usually we just do it for victims of mass murderers, since that happens at a single location.

Everyone should compromise. Just build a memorial for the hero police officers who delivered his victims directly to his front door. That way we will have a memorial somewhat related to Dahmer's victims and we can praise the police officers all at the same time. This should make everyone happy.

Memorial refrigerator magnets?

again, there should be a plaque made when a politician comes up with uber stupid. affix plaque to politician building. when enough plaques are mounted -collapse- the problem is corrected.

Why would there be a memorial for Dahmer's victims? I mean, not to sound harsh, but there isn't one for, you know, the Green River Killer's victims, or Gacy's, or Bundy's, or Manson's or whoever.

And it does seem like a memorial under these circumstances is just inviting weirdos and psychos to gather there and be sick. "Whoa, I heard he killed and ate like 19 people here!" "Right? That is so cool!"

The more I think about it, the stranger it seems.

I hate docudramas like this. No one will give a crap in another two months, as it should be.

Although we have those roadside memorial crosses so i guess fark it, put up something for everyone. Drop dead in isle 17 at Wal-Mart from a fall off a mobility scooter while reaching for pork rinds? Screw a plaque to the shelf.

Is this a thing?  Are there memorials to other serial killers victims?  Honest question. I didn't know we did that sort of thing.

2022-10-02 9:10:14 AM
They have to be very careful how they handle this.  If they prepare it wrong, it will be viewed as tasteless.

2022-10-02 9:11:11 AM
Maybe, if instead of a memorial for the victims of just one local cannibal, they could make it a memorial for all victims of cannibals worldwide. Perhaps that would make the concept more palatable, but then again, you don't want to bite off more than you can chew.

There's a guy near here that goes around and picks those memorials up and trashes them. He says they're abandoned garbage left by the roadway.

He is not a well liked person.

Like many have said are there memorials for other serial killer victims? And yeah they would probably be visited by creepy serial killer fans and put up on YouTube vlogs.
If they want to do something plant a tree to each victim on the lot with no fanfare and be done with it. If you really want to make a change they should change the damn police that gave him a victim back a d let him get away with stuff for years.

I always wondered why the head of that statue is oversized in proportion to the body.  It looks more like Joker.

The Marquette Wire in 2012 reported that Ogden was prohibited from developing on the land as part of its agreement to purchase it for $500.

I was drawn to this line.

How did they buy it for $500 and who did they buy it from? And why would they want to buy it if they couldn't build on it? I presume they're paying property taxes on it.

So what's the end game? Are they betting that eventually the city/town will let them build on it? When? 10 years from now? 50?

Is there a Ted Bundy victim memorial statue?

In this case, I kinda of sorta understand.  The victims were primarily gay poor people of color, which is why Dahmer was able to kill with horrifying impunity for so long.

Yeah, a stone or bronze monument isn't doable here. Too many assholes would enjoy vandalizing/worshiping/TikTok dancing around it, thus retraumatizing the families and the neighborhood. As an alternative, maybe the could create an endowed social work or police oversight position named not after Dahmer but after one or more of his victims?

City bought it (I believe from Ogden back in '91 because they own a ton of stuff on the southeast end of the ghetto where this happened) to raze the building. I never heard of them buying it back. I presume it was done with a wink and nod for some bit of property tax relief and with an understanding that they never build on that lot.
