I just broke up with my girlfriend. But as the Indonesians say, "Don't worry, one will slide under your door any minute now."

I remember seeing that a bunch of European stadiums have something akin to a moat around the field. A few meters deep, a few meters wide. But I think we can agree that a crushing mob is healthier than wooden bleachers catching fire, which is also a British tradition.

2022-10-02 3:17:45 AM
So a few people were fighting and what do the cops do, shoot tear gas wildly into the crowd immediately triggering a human crush, this was a crime against humanity

2022-10-02 3:18:27 AM
Police responded with tear gas, triggering a stampede, officials said.

Der Spiegel reports more than 170 dead already. Well, I guess from the perspective of the idiots who stormed the pitch it was all worthwhile.

Welcome to Wrexham, Episode 10 does a decent dive into hooliganism. There's an incident after the first home match Ryan & Rob attend, and the Wrexham 'firm' (gang) beat up a Wrexham supporter because they're all agro from the game, looking to fight, and can't find any supporters of the opposition. So, yeah...there's some shiat fans in football, but we have the same issues in America with all of our professional sports as well. It's not just limited to English football...

RoyFokker'sGhost: but we have the same issues in America

American fans aren't as bad.  We might storm the field and tear down goalposts after a big win, and maybe torch a few cars after championships, and some fans get drunk and into fights, but we don't have this whole culture where bands of fans roam around picking fights and rioting at every match.

Yup.

Back in 2018, I went to a soccer match in Prague and I quickly noticed how there was chain link fencing that separated the home team fans and the opposing fans.

You will never see that at an American sporting event.

This article seems very light on photos and videos. In the videos I've seen, you get to see the police absolutely laying into people with batons, like three cops smashing a kid who is already on the ground. It's absolutely despicable

Rather have Football hooligans than cops. Hooligans don't have all the fancy equipment to kill people.

I can attest that Indonesia has never, at any point, left the EU. Their membership status has remained unchanged since EU's very conception - even back when it was just a coal union.

Being a member of this species is so embarrassing sometimes.  When I was a teenager I lived near the University of Kentucky's football stadium (American football, obvs).  One night Kentucky beat Alabama (not a common occurrence in living memory) and the Kentucky fans stormed the field, tore down the goalposts, etc.  If you had an Alabama license plate, you would have been lucky to get out of the parking lot without broken windows, broken taillights, or dents.  farking pathetic.  That said, nobody died or even got seriously injured.

Is this the right time or place, given that this was outdoors and more of a stampede? Bah, I'll risk it.

Don't go to enclosed places.

Definitely don't go to crowded enclosed places.

Absolutely don't go to anywhere where there are "fans".

I'll think of more life tips later.

NEVER go to a soccer game.

Problem solved.

From The Guardian:

"Rights experts have demanded answers over the police response, pointing to Fifa stadium safety guidance that states that "crowd control gas" should not be carried or used by stewards or police around the perimeter of the field of play."

This would make #2 on that list. #1 is the same scenario...it's all just a little bit of history repeating.

2022-10-02 9:00:18 AM
This was a poor crowd control response by a untrained police force. Soccer riots and field invasions should be expected.  The police overreacted and chased the fans off the field quickly and violently. They were outnumbered and deployed tear gas inside a crowded stadium seemingly after they had secured the field. Now I haven't seen a lot of footage from the stands to know if there was violence they were attempting to affect by causing the parties to leave via tear gas, but it is never a good idea to deploy it in a stadium. Add to a likely poor designed stadium with limited exits will lead to a crush situation quite easily from previous tragedies.

Meh, I'd say they were imitating eastern European and South American hooligans these days. CCTV and reforms after Hillsborough  (which was a crowd management, not hooligan tradegy) ended the bad old days of "The English Disease."

2022-10-02 10:28:15 AM
Yeah, deploying tear gas inside a crowded, enclosed stadium sounds like an awful idea.

Complete amazement? Guess you don't know many Bits or any rugby or cricket fans. Segregation of fans only really happens for football (soccer) here so it wouldn't be particularly surprising that it doesn't happen for other sports.

When are these countries going to come to their senses and ban soccer? No entertainment event is worth the violence and death soccer matches bring.

2022-10-02 5:44:52 PM
The Gun Lobby:  This happened in Indonesia, a country with gun control, so banning guns does not work.

The Anti-Gun Lobby:  This would have been worse without gun control, gun controls keep the guns away from the people who use them.

Fact: Indonesia did enact gun control and murders, which were six times the US rate before, went down dramatically and stayed down..

Mass murders don't require a mob of football fans in the US. One guy with a gun is enough, or perhaps a small gang of terrorists.

Discuss. Without guns or football crowds full of hooligans.

2022-10-02 5:49:09 PM
Let's talk about banning the use of teargas by the cops large assemblies of people protesting or peaceful alike (it's already banned for use by the military conventions). Why do the police need weapons that are banned for use on non-civilians?

OK, I am back on subject. Are we all in agreement?

American soccer stadiums used by MLS and USL have separate areas for away fans. However, there usually are some away fans sprinkled throughout the stadium as well. But a majority of the away fans are in a separate section.

Yeah...
Heard some more details this morning; cops basically suffocated most of them with tear gas while they were inside the stadium tunnels. Terrible indeed. Jeez...

Apparently FIFA bans the use of tear gas in stadiums for that very reason. But because it was a local game, they had no say in the matter.
...
Football fans are the worst, no matter what country.
But in this case, the cops absolutely murdered most of those people.
