It's true. And to think last year we were in the big 10 championship

Brian Ferentz though Verdun was too aggressive of an operation.

They moved the ball well against Michigan, I thought. I definitely had concern in the 4th when Iowa had cut the lead to 20-7 and was driving with the ball.

If he doesn't have the players to run the scheme he wants, he should adapt his scheme.

Ah who am I kidding, even the professional coaches can't do that. It hurts their ego too much

While special teams and defense haven't been a problem for Kirk Ferentz's team this year

That's pretty understated, by the numbers the Iowa defense is almost as good as the offense is bad.

Probably why they are 3-2 instead of 0-5, which any other team with that terrible of an offense would be

I've long felt that a defense's stat of points given up per game is an incomplete stat. There is a problem with all data in one way or another but I don't know how you'd get a better picture of a defense on stats alone.

The old cliche of a team that runs the ball with a tough defense? Is the defense that good or are offenses not hitting their average points against them because there aren't as many possessions as would normally be had when playing a pass happy team?

Oh, shiat. How about some sort of combo that takes into account points given up per drive that factors where the starting field position was. Hell, talk a problem out in your head and sometimes a possibly adequate solution appears. How did that only come to me now?

One of you smarty pants who didn't fail algebra three times should get on that.

Pretty sure this already exists (I know they can calculate estimated points value based on where a drive begins and calculating points vs expected points would be trivially easy).

Don't know what they call it but that's pretty similar to what I used to calculate drive success rates for Arena Football by myself.

If I didn't believe that before, the 2021 Seahawks convinced me of it. 11th out of 32 in points allowed, and 28th out of 32 in yardage allowed. And that was an absolutely putrid defense. They routinely lost the TOP battle, sometimes by huge margins. That kept the ball out of the offense's hands, put the offense in horrible field position, and ran out of gas whenever they needed to get a late stop.

Petras needs to grab some pine, and the Dumb Ferentz needs to let Alex Padilla take the reigns.

Petras, to date, has been the benefactor of Iowa's system, which doesn't require spectacular QB play. In fact, it works best with a serviceable QB who can control the clock, throw catchable balls to the TE or swing back on 3rd down, and don't turn it over. You don't have to put up a ton of points, or take a lot of chances. Most of  Ferentz' QB's fit that mold, and win 8-9-10 games a year. Hell, Petras won 10 last year.

I thought when Brian was named OC that it was put up or shut up time for him. Especially if he had any chance of taking over for his dad. Frankly, had it worked out, I would have been happy. Fry to Ferentz to.... That's all most people know about Iowa football. 2 coaches. And handing it off was a nice idea. But that's all but done and gone now.

The season isn't in the shiatter, by any means. But I gotta wonder what DC Phil Parker is saying in the coaches room. I hope he's being upfront and honest to KF. His defense deserves that much out of him.

The only play that seems to consistently work for them is the QB rollout and throw to the TE.  Shut that down and you more or less force them out of ideas

But, look at the direction he was rolling out. To his left. He looked like an awkward drunk trying to pass at times.

At differing times he had TE's LaPorta and Lachey on nice little zips over the top and Petras overshot em like he was shooting 3 pointers from half court..

Those plays have been in Iowa's playbook since Hayden Fry was there. It isn't like it's a new wrinkle for Petras to perfect.

At this point, you have to see if Padilla can ignite a spark in the O.

Sure didn't see that one coming. Especially this early in the season.

I mean, 67-26 in the B1G? Wow.

Nebraska, 2009, finished 10-4 with a similarly bad offense. That entire season came from Alex Henery's foot and from Ndamukong Suh's demolition derby. The final tally was 36 total season touchdowns (half against cupcakes, only 18 touchdowns against real opponents) and 24 field goals.
