I have watched the Third Series now. I had to work for it using my computer, my cellphone and my TV, so I eaned it.  I knew I was able to watch the first two Seasons and found them and the third on Crave. Patting myself on the pat for doing so with a miniumum of swaring and fuss.

Is this show worth getting into if you aren't a hard-core fan of anything? I have Paramount+ so that's not a problem. I've watched all the original Star Trek and Next Generation, but not anything past that. I watched all the original movies and all the new ones, but I'll be honest I don't keep track of the plotlines enough to know why it was a big deal Leonard Nimoy came back in one of the movies except that he was in the old movies. They didn't seem to explain it very well at the time, so I think I was on point.

So if I'm that detached/suffering from GenX, can I still watch this show? Will I need to know tons of backstory or can I watch this in bed on my iPad with my cats?

Yes. I am a casual fan and LOVE this series. Lots of hilarious jokes. I watched the big name eps of TOS, some TNG, DS9, Enterprise, but mostly the movies. I get tons of the references. It is tons of fun and an easy watch.

It's fun regardless -- you may miss some of the easter eggs if you haven't seen 'all' the old trek, but it's a surprisingly strong series in its own merit, no back story knowledge necessary.

Well I don't know all the little details a super fan knows like every episode and such. I mean casual fan as in I know general stuff, but not one of the people who will go "In episode X it was ___ , BUT it was ____ in episode Y." On knowing minor details.

I know big details, not finer moments. I know Tribbles, but not the guys ship or what star base the episode was at. That is my def of casual fan.

I see this kind of question often on Reddit. "Should I watch this?"

I'm hardly the poster-girl of outright Ukranian courage, but maybe people should try watching a show and forming their own opinions before scurrying to the internet to figure out whether they're okay to consume amusing television.

Youngsters are weird.

You don't have to take a referendum on it, though,

Snark aside (including your own pathetic attempt) I'm really puzzled by this. I see it for TV shows, for comics. People (assume, humans) begging permission from other people (assume, humans) to read or watch stuff.

Something in the mindset has changed. I'm sure it's condusive to its age and while it seems bad to me, it might be good for everyone else.

As of yet, though, I don't get it.

I think it's more about how the internet has effected social life. Back in the day your friends would recommend stuff. Now our friends are dwarfed by an army of anonymous people online with similar interests and there's orders of magnitude more content to winnow.

"I like X, should I watch Y?" seems like a perfectly cromulent way to get a good estimate on if you'd like something. Like Troma? You'd probably like Movie X. Dislike Troma? Maybe Movie X isn't for you.  I've found some great series and movies that way I'd never have discovered on my own.

Likewise,  if something goes south quickly, it's good to be warned.

It's more a matter of "Is this good enough to spend time on?" This question has become more and more relevant in the age of review bombing, with good shows like She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel having artificially deflated IMDB scores due to it, and poorly written but well-made tedium like White Lotus and Modern Family winning Emmies over much, much better shows.

/Ok, Murray Bartlett deserved his Emmy, but Coolidge was the worst part of that show. I can't stand that she's the one character coming back.

I can not get into any modern iteration of Star Trek. I was annoyed by the unsubtle DSC, the overly violent and
stupid Picard. I've held off on SNW because I really didn't want to get disappointed and unfortunately the body horror version of Pike is all I see when I see Anson's face. (thanks in your face modern writers)

Getting that out of the way, I thought the few early episodes were on the level of internet web toons, but, I caught a few clips that won me over.

I feel the same way. I recently subjected myself to a thorough rewatch of Picard season 2 . And, wow, it is even more vile than I originally thought, just a constant barrage of unmitigated garbage. They don't even have a handle on the characters they created for the show, much less the the titular Jean Luc Picard.
It's an abomination on every imaginable level.

It's not whether it's OK, it's that there's too much out there. Not only is there too much, some of what is out there is so inside that you can't really appreciate it if you aren't in the know. All I was asking is if it was worth my time. There are literally hundreds of others shows to watch if it wasn't.

I'm an old. I don't need permission to watch shiat. But since I'm dying sooner than the rest of you, I want to know if I'm wasting my time or not doing it.

I don't think I've ever watched an entire episode of any series, except maybe Voyager because it would be on Sunday morning, while I was curing a hangover.
And I love that show, even though I very certainly miss half the jokes.

I'd like to have some sort of quality to my time wasting. Fark is fun for me. Slogging through a season of "The Affair" before I realize it's not a show for me? Not so much. So recommendations based on my background and what other people think count.

It's hard to put yourself in the shoes of a casual fan of this series when you're not one, but a nice chunk of the humour calls back to the rest of the franchise, particularly TOS and TNG. I think it should still work, and the characters are still funny in their own right if a bit broadly drawn. I love it.

I'd equate it to my knowledge of Marvel, maybe. I saw the first Thor, the 2 GotG films, and then Black Panther. Never read any of the comics either. I still had a lot of fun with Black Panther even if I didn't quite all the references; I think ST: LD should be like that for you.
