Who could have predicted that allowing one company to gobble up all of the intellectual property would have consequences?

Mentat: Who could have predicted that allowing one company to gobble up all of the intellectual property would have consequences?

Obviously no one, if this were a predictable result then Americas strong antitrust protections and merger and acquisition protections focused on the consumers best interest would have stopped it from happening.

If you've got decent protection practices from viruses and malware, a quick search of "whatever-network livestream free" is really cheap. And about as reliable as their streaming services, honestly.

You've also got private torrent sites, OTA broadcasts, and various other pirate-flavored options.

The only reason I'm paying for NFL+ right now is that it'd take more effort than $10/month of my time to get the five or so games I watch a week via other means.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Rolling over and paying an extra billion dollars would likely require them to raise their rates, which leads to more cancellations, which requires them to raise their rates even further, which leads to more cancellations, etc.

Realistically, playing chicken with the networks any time the contracts are due for re-negotiation is the ONLY move they have to stay afloat for a few more years.

Network wants more money.
Cable provider tells network to go to hell.
Network cuts cable provider off.
Subscribers yell at cable provider.
Cable provider pays up.
Cable provider raises its rate.
Subscribers yell at cable provider.

And the internet savvy say "YARR!"

I tried to break myself from my pirating ways, but it's still cheaper and far more convenient.

At this point, I pay for NFL+ because it is actually more convenient. And Rifftrax, because they're cool.

I cancelled them back when they cut off Voom. Which was their sister network.

The break room at my workplace unfortunately has Dish Network....and I found out today they no longer have ESPN when I tried to change the channel.

Looks like networks and providers are determined to kill the golden goose and think they can milk people forever. I cut a year and a half ago, it just got tiring to have channels I watched cut and prices go up. I have three streaming services and they are still cheaper than cable and I have a better variety of what I can watch. But streaming services seem to be bound to kill their service too by putting in commercials.

Right wingers: it has begun, the fall of the Satanic Disney. Soon, all we'll be watching is Fox News. Then, America will truly be a paradise.

Me: they'll be back on DN next week.

Righ wingers: then I'm canceling my DN.

Me: all other providers still have Disney.

Right wingers: then I'm going back to over the air TV.

Me: there's no fox news over the air

Right wingers: <short circuits>

...meanwhile, Hulu and Disney+ and streams exist. Cable's days are numbered at this point. They tried on demand, they've given you ways to record your shows, but in the end, Dame Convenience is going to make them go the way of Blockbuster.

Then they'll argue about speed and try to ratchet up the cost of Internet connections.

*Looks at pricing model*

*Looks at tech roll out plan*

*Looks at product mgmt team*

Heh... no.  We'll double your speed for about $10 a month extra... and then not be able to deliver it to all the people screaming at us "Take our farking money!"

/Remember, in 2002 the MRC of a 1G internet connection was something on the order of $15k/month.  Today it's $79.

Well no, they put in commercials to offer cheaper options. Some shows have commercials on Hulu (and some shows on Netflix's ad-supported tier don't have commercials) for licensing reasons. E.g., Studio X goes to Netflix and licenses them exclusive rights to ad-free SVOD for their new movie. Then they go to Hulu and license rights to AVOD for the same movie.

I have a Roku. I get my locals through the spectrumTV app. (The new fangled OTA digital sucks in my area) We have Netflix, Disney/Hulu/ESPN, and HBO Max, paramount+. Cheaper than Dish or DirecTV

"Grey's Anatomy which returns for Season 19"

So that's why each year there's been one more organ discovered in the human body.

I really need to get mom onboard with the Spectrum UI on Roku. That would save roughly $25 monthly to not have the Spectrum STBs.

I'm waiting for Discovery to shiat all over that.  Strangely doesn't have NFL Network, either

I have Sling. I got an email from them yesterday telling my the Disney owned channels would be unavailable.

At the time I was listening to Marc Maron's interview with Abigail Disney and they were discussing the obscene profits Disney was making during the pandemic and the fact that they were raising prices at the parks all while cast members were living out of their cars.

I usually don't take sides in these carriage conflicts but Disney can EABOD.

We have 1 dish  Network receiver in our family room. The other rooms in the house just use the fire stick with the DN app.

Weirdly..... Those channels are out on the dish receiver, but we can watch all of them on the app.

Stream, aka over the internet. I canceled my DTV satellite service a couple of months ago, tried Sling and Fubo, wound up back with DTV. Saving about $60/month vs satellite.

Only Fubo and DTV have Root Sports, which is how I watch the Mariners and the Kraken. Fubo's performance for the biggest sports games was dodgy.
