This is making the rounds on all the sites. There's also a full video of before (got it below, should start about 10 seconds before the "WE HAVE WEIGHTS!" @ 14:40). Saw a reddit comment that covers what happened before and why it's a big deal.

As a competitor in a very low stakes annual fishing tournament, the full length video is absolutely enthralling. The first 14 minutes or so are outwardly boring, because each team is coming up to weight their 5 biggest fish and the weights are in the teens, low twenties. Then, with the leader at 23lbs. Or so, these mavericks roll in with 5 fish weighing over 33lbs. Outweighing the leader by an average of 2lbs per fish, which is pretty unbelievable in any circumstance.
The crowd is talking amongst themselves and there's a bit of disbelief, but no hullabaloo.
Then they take their winning fish, hold them up for photos and the rest of the teams to see and any experienced fisherman knows roughly the weight of any given fish and you can hear the cognitive dissonance in the crowd.
Then the 'winners' start to take their fish and leave when the judge/official calls them back over and chats with the guy in the video for a minute.
It looks like the official presses him a bit. Like gives him the chance to come clean or withdraw from the tournament. Maybe he's testing him.
You can tell by the body language that something is up and the crowd starts to murmur from a distance away.
The official grabs a knife from his assistant and a fish and drops it on the ground and slices it open. Digs his hands inside, then holds it up like a beating heart in the temple of doom and yells "WE HAVE WEIGHTS IN FISH!!!"
The crowd erupts and surges forward and this video begins.
I have had close relatives come to almost assaulting another close friend over a $20entry and bragging rights. These guys have swindled anywhere from $300k to millions of prizes including a brand new boat (that shiat is expensive)
I wouldn't be surprised if these guys disappear one day and justice is never officially served. Don't piss off a bunch of guys with boats. They know where to hide the body.

That is the problem when you start offering big cash prizes, rely on the honor system and have little regulation and oversight.  people start cheating cause they have no honor and just are greedy SOBs

The fact they were just told to walk away, shows there is no real consequences for cheating, and will probably do it again

Cool. So we currently have cheating scandals in chess, poker, and fishing.

Add golf and we have the fake sports quadfecta

And this is why I limit my fishing to the digital kind.

But seriously, these guys are farked. They had sponsors who have been defrauded. The tournament sponsors have been defrauded. Even if they don't go to jail these guys are going to have to pay out a nice sum, because they've pissed off companies with money and lawyers on retainer.

Perhaps, don't offer so much prize money if you are relying on the honesty of the competitors.

So why did the law need to get involved?

It is essentially fraud. At this point all the past winnings are suspect and and the totals that they required in cash and prizes are more than enough to make it a criminal fraud case.

Ah. You think bowling should be ahead of fishing.

I agree with you

On the one hand, yeah, the consequences seem pretty lax. On the other hand, I know a few people who've been in fishing competitions. Generally friendly bunch, but do not underestimate the grudge a group of southerners can hold. This will go one of two ways: 1. Everyone was cheating anyway, so everyone shrugs it off. 2. These guys are going to be pariahs and have to basically leave and never come back. The number of places where they're about to be informed they're not welcome has just risen by more than a few zip codes.

They weren't told to walk away because they were getting a slap on the wrist.  They were told to walk away so that they didn't do anything to piss off the angry mob that was surrounding them so that they didn't get farking lynched.  This is Big Time Felony Fraud, and they've already been suspected of cheating before.  The grand prize in this particular tourney was a $125k boat/trailer combination, and it was part of an overall championship with a $300k cash prize.  It basically calls into question everything they've won beforehand, so they're going to get sued into the ground by previous tourneys AND their sponsors on top of the criminal charges that are getting pressed for this specific incident.

Watching the video, some of the mob sounded like it was moment away from setting their filet knives into the cheaters.  These Bubbas were pissed.

They're more than farked,  in Ohio cheating on a contest with a prize over $1000 is a class 5 felony.  The prize for this was $45,000,  with the viral nature of the video, I wouldn't be surprised if the state doesn't go after then even if the tournament league doesn't.

These guys had "won" $306,000 in the past year,  first place at that event was $45,000.  If you came in second at a few of these events and found out they likely won by cheating, I'd imagine you'd be mad too.

Cheating in these tournaments has to be ridiculously easy sometimes.  Like catch fish in advance and keep them on a live line nearby, or adding weights, etc. Why aren't all fish cut open as just a stander measure to ensure people aren't blatantly cheating?
