This may be one of my least favorite things about capitalism. I don't get why people think that the erasure of such cultural history is a good thing or something that needs to be supported. Is it really worth it?

It is what it is.

The Viper Room is just another club out in Los Angeles, same as The Rainbow, The Whisky, etc.
As fans of music we may think of them as historic but the fact of the matter is that they get no special designation from the city so they have to be profitable.

And sometimes even when it is profitable there's the risk that it'll get sold and that'll be the end of it.

TFA mentions that P was the band playing when Phoenix kicked off.  P was a short-lived band featuring Depp and Jenco, with the Butthole Surfers' Gibby Haynes on vocals.  I have their one and only album; it sounds not unlike a good Butthole Surfers album.

Well I can't refute that. But it seems to me that basically everybody else loses out. That's a hell of an exchange.

They should implode it with Depp inside. It was drugs that River Phoenix consumed at his club, allowed by Depp's druggie ass, that ended his life. Oh, and with the added of bonus of Depp's goons assaulting and literally kicking Phoenix to the curb as he was overdosing.
Depp basically murdered River Phoenix in his drug den/club.

I get the commerce.  Still sucks when an urban space with formative memories attached to it goes the way of the condo.  It's just ego, I suppose - attaching personal significance to something lots of people don't know or care about.

For some reason I had it in my mind that John Belushi died there but he died at Chateau Marmont ten years before the Viper room opened. Anyway, csb, I got invited to the Viper room when it was newish, because I had a hot girlfriend. But the guy who invited us was such a creep he might as well have come out said this was a rape situation.

Having lived around and near Boston I totally get this.  In the past few decades we went from having a vibrant and busy music scene with plenty of venues to seeing bands forming and start their careers playing out of town in Worcester, Framingham, Lowell and Providence.

BITD those bands could have spent years playing in the city until they needed to branch out to a new audience.

In that neck of CA, they're too expensive for anyone to actually live in them. They're investment properties and probably AirBnB hotel rooms. Maybe they'll have rentals for 500% of the average hourly wage in the immediate area, which is okay now that there's a subway stop nearby, oh wait...

To be fair, capitalism is also corporations making mass real estate purchases and keeping what they buy empty to drive prices up, so yeah.

Farking capitalism.

condos are over priced, tiny living spaces not affordable to the general public. However since they're profitable, that's all that gets built and the middle/low classes get the shaft as those condos push further out, into artist spaces, slummy areas and the people living there have to move further out still... Soon, the whole planet will look like Coruscant. And then we all know what happens, clone troopers, strange beings at the local pub, kind of like LA is now, only uglier.

The "affordable" housing they're mandated to build tends to be next to the old PCB farm where the disused transformers have died.

I'm pretty sure the Viper Room has not been in operation for a while. It was a pretty mediocre joint in the first place.

The bigger loss was a few miles east, with G-Son Studios, which got turned into "living/office spaces" that paid a faint nod to the place's significant musical history.

I think taking care of historical buildings is incredibly important, but a 30-year-old nightclub that rich pricks frequented to use heroin, opened in the same building as numerous inconsequential bars, does not a landmark make.

If you waded through the atrocious farking article, it eventually gets 'round to mentioning that Depp sold his interest in 2004, after a scandal in which a partner who was suing him for fraud disappeared. Don't know what to make of that last bit. On the surface, it looks shady as shiat. But the guy was claiming Depp hid millions of dollars in profits. There shouldn't be quite so many dollars in legit profits in a place that size, no matter what they charge for a drink. Given Depp's apparent ability to manage his own finances, if he had anything to do with day to day operations, actually being in the red wouldn't be at all surprising. And if the money is there, and not legit, you don't take it to court for reasons that should be obvious. Therefore, maybe the guy was just insane, and ended up going off somewhere and topping himself.

One of the problems in "the live music capital of the world" (Austin) is that it's too expensive for most musicians to live here. So the city no longer lives up to its name, precisely due to the original appeal of the place.

Never actually went to it - that is, never went inside or for an event, but walked by it once.

Saw a payphone.  thought to myself, "oh shiat, that's probably the very phone Joaquin called 911 as his brother was flopping around like a fish, probably where my feet are hitting the sidewalk....."
