As stated here and in the article, fisheries are already under stress. The best thing is swapping out some meat meals with alternatives.

Over COVID I got a lot better cooking with lentils and chickpeas. Very versatile when you learn how to spice them. WFH gave me more time to cook for myself, so I know not everyone can do it, but working to integrate them into the American diet by making it convenient could help. I don't typically have the gassy issue heavy meat eaters get when they finally encounter fiber in their diet, but if there was some way to reduce it could go a long way.

I used to have that but my appendectomy seems to have cured it.

I guess massive doses of antibiotics (burst appendix), 10 days of a liquid diet then starting on probiotics to rebuild my gut flora did the trick.

they are really good. After I got over the gross factor from eating something far outside of societal norms they were pretty darn good. I don't like the legs. I pulled them off.

We could also just eat less meat. The USDA recommends a maximum of 4 ounces of meat per day for ordinary people on a 2,000 calorie diet. A 12 or 16 ounce steak is an indulgence.

If you don't want to get all carb-heavy with your meals, eat something like green peas. They have way more fiber and protein than carbs, plus other nutritious stuff like iron and vitamins. They'll fill you up. Ditto for beans. And a lot of nuts. Eggs are good too if you want an easy, affordable protein source and can't stand the idea of eating too many plants.

Seafood is relatively healthy but we can't just all switch to eating fish. The fisheries won't support that. Fish can be farmed but it's not always as cheap and delicious as the stuff we just go scoop out of the water.

Lots of commonly enjoyed fish are really low in mercury. Scallops, trout, lobster, catfish, shrimp, tilapia, salmon, crab, haddock, etc. Fish that eat bugs and plants and krill and algae (and ones that eat small fish that subsist on that stuff) aren't a threat. You just need to limit your portions of stuff like tuna, swordfish, grouper. Big long-lived predator fish that accumulate all the mercury from their food, their food's food, their food's food's food, and so on down the line.

Plus, mercury isn't everything. Red meat contributes to cancer, heart disease, etc. And if you're not planning to live 700 years, eating scallops and salmon on the regular won't poison you with mercury.

I'm afraid you're way behind.  Why do you think that fish farming is suddenly the hot idea of the day?  Musn't let the consumers know that every natural fish in the ocean is pretty much gone.

The fishing boats get larger and larger, and more sophisticated, so they can catch the remaining fish, but fishing as a way of life is dying.  They never stop.  Nobody ever stops fishing until the fishery completely crashes.

The most famous fishery in the world, at least in the English-speaking world.    They settled Canada and the northeast with so many cod, they could scoop them out with their hands.
They never came back. Everyone ignored all the warning signs, and then they waited for years for the fishing moratorium to be lifted, and......I don't know if it ever was, if they do recreational fishing or what.  I don't live there.  But those fisheries  are never coming back.  This case is used as an example for any ecological education, teaching about fisheries, etc.
And every fishery in the world is still being overfished, with much better equipment than they used to have.  Gotta catch em all.

This. It can be more sustainable than meat, but you have to do a lot of research.

CSB: We live in Japan and the nutrition guide my wife got when she was pregnant basically said "Don't let these white people scare you into not eating fish. Sure there's lots of mercury, but the stress you'll experience as a Japanese person unable to eat their favorite foods will be worse for the baby than the fish iatself." Then it tells you how many times a week you can eat various things including (no joke) sperm whale and right whale. Google says those species are threatened and endangered respectively. Silly shiat.

I eat steak maybe once every two months? Seafood even less frequently. But today I have a 2lb ribeye in de fridge, salted and drying, going on de grill over oak. Maybe. Still need to check if the oak is dry.

Give 'em a try! I have a bag of chili-lime crickets and they make for good snacking every now and then.

They're light and crispy with a slightly nutty undertone.
