The French are soooooooo-phisticated when it comes to comedy. Who else would appreciate the subtle nuance of Jerry Lewis falling down and imitating the mentally challenged?

There's comic books? In the dialogue bubbles, does it just say "Ribbit" over and over?

Well, the French certainly lack the sophistication and intelligence of your typical American audience with it's demands for highbrow comedy.

Oh, it did, but only among Americans of sophistication and good taste.

When I was in London in 1980, I loaded up on Asterix & Obelix books I didn't have yet.  The bookseller expressed surprise that Asterix was popular with Yanks.  I smiled and told him that there are more of us than you might think.

Asterix and Tintin books were very popular in Canada when I was growing up.

Coincidentally, I was watching the Adventures of Tintin TV series last night; it's awesome.

I'm still upset that Spielberg/Jackson haven't made a sequel yet.

I grew up in West Germany in the 70s. I had Asterix in at least 4 languages. Never had the urge to see a film adaptation though.

All but one of the live-action movies were crap. The second one, "Astérix et Cléopâtre", is considered a classic, but it was because it had all the hallmarks of the humour from Les Nuls, a comedy group that would be for France kind of like a mix between the ZAZ and SNL.
Incidentally, they also did the translation for Wayne's World, which had even more jokes than the original, making it a movie that's worth watching in the two languages.
