Why did they deport her? Stopover as in flight or as in spend a week then move on to Canada?  None of this makes sense.

she was asked whether she'd had an abortion while detained at Los Angeles airport in June

They must have detained her for a long time.

Oh I see, so this story is going to get picked up by Fox News and turned into a completely different story that ends up coincidently deciding the outcome of the 2022 midterms in favor of the GOP?

Post Trump, CBP is acting as its own independent governing authority beholden to no one and for some reason, no one who wants to do anything about it is being allowed to do so.

This exact thing actually happens a bunch to specifically Australians passing through the US to another destination if they don't have their paperwork 1000% correct.

That's a broad brush but there are probably individuals inside CBP who like to believe they have more power than they should.

What am I saying?  Scratch the word "probably".

My thoughts exactly.  I'm imagining she was asked if she were pregnant and she went nuts and they detained and deported her for that.  She IS a ginger you know.  They all be cray cray.

That's what I did a month ago. Refused to have any flight that put me though the US. Too stupidly dangerous.

Yeah, something weird is going on with this story. Why was she detained? Why was she deported? What does a possible pregnancy have to do with either?

I suspect that 10 kilos of some banned substance were found in her bags, the CBP is investigating where the 5 kilos of banned substance came from, the office of professional responsibility is monitoring the situation of the missing 10 grams of possible banned substance, and the lady has no reason to object being deported because a drug-sniffing dog indicated on her.

But yeah, the important part of the story is her possible (and possibly former) pregnancy status. Sheesh.

Never get an abortion at the airport unless you really have to.  It's much cheaper to get it once you hit your destination

Nice narco fanfic. Only problem is drug dogs "indicate" when their handler tells them to.

I didn't say otherwise. The "narco fanfic" was a joke.

My main point is that this story is missing critical information. Here is the reason given for her detention: "She was detained over suspicions regarding her intention to house and cat sit during her holiday.". Really? Detained and deported over suspicion of attempted house sitting? In another country, even?  There has to be a better explanation, or CBP should have to do some explaining of their own.

That happens sometimes when you spay a cat. You pick up a stray and you find that it's already pregnant. Sad, but life's not pretty sometimes.

I assume this is the repeat story about the woman who was going to cat/house sit for awhile but didn't have a visa that allowed her to "work", and they deported her because they consider exchanging lodging for cat/house sitting to be a type of work.

Yes, that policy is rather strict. And asking someone about about their intimate personal business should be verboten.

Also, of all the things that never happened...

CBP does not just randomly detain people (in spite of what certain media outlets and public figures would like you to believe).  There had to be some reasonable suspicion that she was violating some aspect(s) of section 212 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.  Also, for her to be removed (turned around at the border/port of entry) means that she either admitted to or was found to be in violation of the INA.  Being pregnant and/or having an abortion does not lead to removal under U.S. immigration laws.

There is clearly A LOT that this woman is not saying here.  And, of course, DHS/CBP can't contradict her bullshiat story without a signed Privacy Act Waiver.

That is why the Biden Administration should send out a press release regarding this, stating that all Trump era TSA rules will be reviewed and questions like this eliminated. Set the narrative. Make it so it looks as if the GOP wanted to regulate foreigners right to choose also.

My brother gets pulled aside and interviewed EVERY. single. time he tries to fly. Every time.

It's to the point where he brings a copy of his birth certificate and his passport every time he flies, so he doesn't miss the flight.

It is, but the article suggests she was on her way to Canada. Why does US customs feel entitled to be making Canadian visa decisions on our behalf? fark off, and stop oppressing people about abortion.

/  Someone up-thread suggested to never book connecting flights through the US. I have to concur.

Yeah they do. There've been plenty of stories. I could tell a few that I've personally witnessed. Now and again, you get a CBP (the B stands for banana-republic) guy who's so in love with his own ego, he'll fark people around for the shiats and giggles.

I read here that she was actually turned away because of a cock-up in Brisbane and they couldn't print boarding passes. Apparently her frequency of travel may have also raised red flags about her being a possible mule. The abortion interrogation was just a very strange and intrusive icing on the cake that has, naturally, taken over the story.

His name (whatever that is) matches someone considered "important" on the no fly list.  He's not being randomly selected, but they won't tell you "Yeah, it's some other asshole but we have to grill you to make sure you're not him, even though that asshole is 4 inches taller than you are"

mark625: Detained and deported over suspicion of attempted house sitting? In another country, even?

I don't understand why this is surprising. Without the proper visa this sort of thing is illegal in a lot of countries because it counts as work. That is why you never tell immigration officials this is your reason for or plan while visiting a country if you are arriving on a tourist visa; you always just tell them you are visiting a friend and staying with them for awhile. And you make sure your host knows this in case they get a call from CBP to verify your story.

Despite that f*ck CBP. There is zero reason to ask a traveler about abortion.

/ have done Workaway in several countries; most don't care as long as you aren't getting paid, but some, like the US and UK count any exchange, even room/board, for work as compensation and so illegal without the proper visa

2022-10-01 9:26:02 AM
"I'm coming to the country to illegally work."

turns into

"They only detained me to find out If I had an abortion."

This is an outrage.

Stands With A Tiny Fist: Why does US customs feel entitled to be making Canadian visa decisions on our behalf?

Now this is a better question. I don't know if countries work out deals or if there is some risk or fear that the receiving country will be angry that someone got let through or what, but I've run into a similar sort of thing once in Japan where they wouldn't let me board a flight to the UK unless I also bought a ticket from the UK to literally anywhere else. I was flying to London in 2006 to start a bicycle tour of Europe from there and was planning to take a ferry across to the mainland, but immigration in Japan was for whatever reason looking out for British immigration and so wouldn't let me fly until I'd fulfilled the exact letter of UK immigration requirements. Probably because they didn't want to deal with tourists being flown back to Japan if they didn't satisfy the requirements.

Funny thing was, in the UK they didn't care about me having a flight out booked at all. I told the immigration person I was taking a ferry to France in a couple of weeks and that was that. No need of proof or anything. Luckily I was able to fully refund the ticket for a flight I was never going to use.

But something like that shouldn't hold for connecting flights and layovers. US CBP was probably just on another power trip, since there is absolutely no consequence for them going on power trips. F*ck CBP.
